I do both. In Texas we love our BBQ cooked over very low heat. In our backyard we had a propane grill and an off-set smoker.

You have it right. Low and slow is the way to do it.

We grill 3-5 times per week year round (burgers, steaks, hot links, brats, country pork ribs, pork tenderloin, etc.).

We bbq/smoke on holidays and special occasions with a few random events throughout the summer (brisket, ribs, etc.).

We typically do brisket for Thanksgiving and Mexican food for Christmas.

The best BBQ....
I was in New Braunfels the other day, and I saw where the opening of Cooper's BBQ has been delayed. It'll be sometime in September.
Therefore, we'll go stay a few days at the Long Mountain RV Park, and we'll motorboat down the river to go fish LBJ Lake, and I'm sure we'll also go a couple of times to Cooper's BBQ in Llano (a short drive from where we'll be staying).
Oh yeah, at home we grill. We also have a Broil King Porta-Chef grille for the motorhome.

Just for the record, barbecue just means to cook meat or fish over an open fire. Cooking meat with a spit, or a grill or ??? as long as it is over an open fire would all be considered barbecuing. Also, unless there is an open fire for the smoker then smoking meat is not technically called barbecuing!

Also, I like it grilled or spit cooked with different types of wood or coal, and with many different types of sauces including the ones called barbecue sauce!
