How is the drive off of I-40 going to Flagstaff for camping? This is another alternative if we don't go camping at Lynx Lake. This area looked nice, but I don't know the roads or area what so ever.
Thanks

There are a number of KOA's on the road. The climb to Flagstaff from California can be taxing to a tow vehicle with a heavy load. There are a number of fuel stops as well as fast food places along the way.

You may be able to see some Elk along the way. Snow season is probably over by now.

From Whittier CA. you can take I-15 north to Barstow and east I-40 all the way to Flagstaff no problems this route all 4 lane interstate hwy. there is one long grade of about 10 miles from junction of I-15 and the 215 to the top of Cajon Pass this is 5 lanes on the way up so no problems it is a major truck route. Places we have stopped this route Needles KOA,do not buy fuel in Needles wait until you cross into Arizona Needles wants all your cash plus your 1st and 2nd child,Kingman KOA We like J&H in Flagstaff but if you have children there is no pool. Some things to see around Flagstaff there is an old lumber barons home on the college worth going through,18 miles north on 89 there is a loop drive that takes you through Sunset Creaters Natl.Mon.and Wupatki Natl.Mon.great Indian ruins,Walnut Canyon cliff dwellings the climb here back to the parking lot is very steep but there benches where you can rest,Sedona red cliffs and buttes, drive down Oak Creek Canyon toward Sedona ,Jerome,Montezuma Castle more cliff dwellings,Fort at Camp Verde and of course Grand Canyon to name a few. Have fun

Nevada Jim that sounds so nice! So your saying there really isn't any mountain type of driving into Flagstaff ie: twistys or switchbacks? We are new to our 23ft-C and are trying to avoid anything too crazy. I am going to certainly look into those stops. I did notice on gasbuddy that the gas prices drop quite a bit once you cross out of CA ! Thanks for that tip!

Hi cruisnmom,

I have done that drive a number of times. There is a grade, but no switchbacks. Pretty straight forward and a beautiful area. Have a great trip

There are some small up and downs between Kingman and Flagstaff I would call them hills not big grades and the Hwy. is straight as an arrow and like I said above it is a 4 lane interstate and major truck route you will have no problems just enjoy and Have fun

If the kids or you need a rest/pit stop in between Kingman and Flagstaff I recommend the little town of Seligman on old route 66. Easy on-off from I-40 and the people were nice and grateful for your business. We bought a few of our Arizona souvenirs inside the A&W restaurant/store which had a pretty good selection. They also have a small western type museum and stores on the main strip.
Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the great info everyone!! We are also considering taking the 89 at Ashford into Prescott area but not sure of that 89 in that area, I have asked and have heard so far the 89 coming in the south direction via I-10 is not a very good route.
Thanks again and Happy Independence Day everyone!

We just came West on 40 from Flagstaff, turning South on 89 into Prescott. The road was fine all the way. 89 is not 40, but no problems. A bit of smoke from local fires, but that was on Monday and Tuesday - probably cleared up my now... Big Rodeo in Prescott, so may be fun to check out...
Good luck on the road,
Smitty
