Where is that forum poster (can't remember his name, MR. BIGG or something like that). We went around and around on this forum about GM stock about a year ago. It was just about the same time GM was announcing the re-introduction of the muscle car CAMARO in the wake of $3/gallon gas (at the time, $3 was considered high) I remember he was all big on GM's stock turning around and all. GM has so much debt, I wouldn't touch that stock even with its 50 year low. Anybody remember Bethlehelm Steel in the 80's?

I wonder if this was what some were thinking prior to the Stock Market Crash of '29
GM goes down it will take all its in house jobs, the thousands of subcontractors and their thousands of vendors, from textiles to bolts, to glass, to tires, machine shops, diemakers, moldmakers etc.
I personally don't see much humor is human suffering
I was replying to the asteroid comment.....and from what I can tell it was posted with a bit of humor.
I have family & friends who have been struggling during these tough economic times. No humor in human suffering from me, too bad you chose to see it that way.
We own GM products, matter of fact just bought a new one last week. My 2008 Pontiac G6 is a very well made car and I plan to enjoy it for many years.
I certainly wish no ill on ANY U.S. car manufacturer. We buy U.S. cars for many reasons and I've always been a fan of GM in particular. After spending most of my career in the auto parts industry I fully understand the ramifications IF any of them fail to thrive.

You chose to post your joke about the sky falling following another joke which was not in good taste. Both of those posts where directly about the topic.
I just hope it will awaken folks to the hard times many are going through and will go through when American institutions are struggling.
There are many threads to post humor on. I think we should try and think about our future, some choose to dance right up to the edge of the cliff, I choose to live my life but proceed with caution.

Humor, good taste, and dancing up to the edge or proceeding with caution are all subjective Joe. I am pretty sure there are times when we are all willing or unwilling participants, in any or all of the above.... so it goes, in the dance we call life.
I understand your concern, really I do. These are hard times, no doubt about it. I see it in so many ways but I choose not to let the media or the doomsayers control my thinking.
One thing we do agree on is our love for GM products. Hey did you know that the Pontiac G6 and Chevy Malibu are 85% made in America (US/Canada)? There are not a lot of vehicles in the current line up that can claim that. I think that's a great way to support our country, car manufacturers, and of course the workers who depend upon new car sales for their livelyhood.
Survival of the fittest holds true in business as well as in nature.
Someone once said "There is no way a person making $10 per hour can afford to buy a new car built by a person making $20 per hour!" That may not be an exact quote, but the thought is the same as the original. It was true then, and it is true now. Perhaps that is why "pre-owned" vehicles consistently seem to outsell new ones.
The marketing people for all the U.S.A. auto makers have always been WAY behind what the public really wants. This was true of Crosley, this was true of Henry J. Kaiser, this was true of Henry Ford I, and it is true today.

I know that my son just lost his well paying job in Phoenix yesterday. They laid off another 6 in the largest home building company in town. In this round employees in the admin area with 11-18 years lost their jobs.
This is the worst anyone can remember in the Phoenix area.
My Mother says that two Ford Dealerships in and around Sacramento just closed too. They were in business for many years.
Times are tough out there for many.
How much of these problems can be placed squarely on the futures market? After the housing market went in the toilet the speculators shifted to oil. Now we are faced with oil prices at or over $135 a barrel. If oil was still at $75 a barrel would we as a nation and the World be in this situation we face now? Gm,Ford, and Chrysler are all hurting because the prices for crude are at ridiculous prices. This has an impact on the whole economy. First to go is going to be luxury items, like new cars, gasoline, insurance for those cars, health insurance, then housing, then food. It appears that this spiral is just getting started and there is not a lot of hope of it being stopped anytime soon. And don't expect the next president who ever he is to make any difference

And apparently & unfortuanately it is going to get worse ... and alot worse. There is nothing yet to stop the oil escalation price. To make matters worse, we are in the beginning of hurricane season. Is this the "doom and gloom" post? Possibly. It is quite possible that we are quite screwed. Those that aren't, are just quite possibly not screwed YET... and I emphasize YET. The price of oil will continue to climb until something happens to cause it to stop climbing. What can that be? More supply? Possibly although getting it through our elected officials seems to be impossible so far. We all yell DRILL DRILL DRILL, but nothing happens. What else can then bring down the price? The dollar increasing in value. Unlikely because of the housing problem. What else can bring down the price of oil? What is left? The most likely thing that will bring down the price of oil is when the MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION simply CANNOT buy it. When will that be? What is the price that you simply can't pay? Whatever that is for the MAJORITY of the population is when the price will start going down. But think about it, most people (not just us Americans) will go to the poor house before we stop driving. So, I guess the majority of the population will have to be poor, and the country be completely broke, before the oil price will actually start going down more than up. Perhaps this is the overall plan. To bankrupt our nation with the product that is the common denominator of ALL products and services under the name of free market capitalism.
Well, the sky fell on 75 more people today because a local paper mill will close its doors tomorrow. The closure was attributed to cost increases of 130% for energy and 40-50% for raw materials. The mill owner said, "It's impossible for any business of our size, that are high, intense users of energy, to pass those costs along to our customers".
