I am planning a trip in the Monaco Windsor from Saint Augustine, Florida to Mystic, Ct. Usually when I go north I try to stay west of Washington but I don't see any quick way to stay west of I-95 from DC to Mystic.
Anyone have current information on I-95 around New York City???
We live in NH, and we travel I95 north, to Emporia, VA, and go to Norfolk, VA and then across the Chesapeak(sp) bay bridge/tunnel, up thru MD, and Wilmington,DL to the Jersey Pike. We then travel up I87, to I84 thru Hartford, CT. From there you should be able to find an exit, to take you over to Mystic. BTW, we've been there many times, as I used to work at the Sub Base in New London, CT, which is the next town over from Mystic. It may be a little longer, but much less gut wrenching, and you miss the DC beltway, and NYC. Good luck, Robbie

Nope....the tolls in Connecticut are gone. Of course, there appears to be road construction every couple of miles! LOL
I drive from Wilmington, NC up to NYC every month, and up to New Haven , CT every few months, and the roads are pretty good, until just before the Bridge into NJ. I drove up yesterday, and it was bumper to bumper for about 5 miles at about 10:00 PM! It runs down into a single lane just before the bridge.
Around DC was fine....I always take the east loop, and then right back onto I-95 at the north side. I take the tunnel in Baltimore, which I'm not sure about with an RV (propane?). Check This site They say that you have to take the bridge instead.
The GW bridge in NY has a booklet on all the restrictions...it's about 103 pages...but here is what you might need: 6.3 Lower Level of the George Washington Bridge only.
House trailers, camper trailers, self-propelled campers,
mobile homes, recreational vehicles, and other vehicles
equipped with LPG installations for cooking, heating or
refrigeration are permitted to travel on the lower level of the
George Washington Bridge provided that:
(a) the LPG container supply does not exceed two
tanks containing not more than 45 pounds LPG
capacity each or one tank not exceeding 60
pounds LPG capacity;
(b) the containers are constructed, installed, and
maintained in accordance with the regulations and
specifications of the Department of Transportation
and National Fire Protection Association; and
(c) the valves remain closed until the vehicle has
cleared the facility.
Once in Connecticut, you should be fine on I-95.
Have a good trip!!

We travel from our home outside Allentown, PA to Richmond twice a year along with friends that join us in Allentown with their motorhome.
What we have found is they leave their home in upstate Vermont south to I-95 to I-287 and across the Tappanzee Bridge to continue on I-287 south into NJ; then I-78 west to Allentown where we join them and then head I-78 west to I-81 south to I-66 east in Virginia; after a short stint on I-66 to Route 17 south until it joins I-95 south of Washington DC.
What we have found is that it adds about 15 miles to our trip, the time traveled has stayed the same. We completely avoid Washington, Baltimore, the tunnels, tolls, Philly, tolls in NJ, NYC and it remains a pleasant trip. Our friends with their 45' have had no problems with this route.
Howdy Don, Rigrarob has a good route. A few years ago we were shipping a floating marina up to Noank, CT. A small town near Mysstic. Anyway, that's the route our trucks took.
Hope you have a great, fun trip. We'll be home from CO sometime in September and I'll get in touch. Take care.
We just came up from D.C. to Mass. I thought we would save some expensive gas by taking the direct route. NEVER AGAIN! Over 75 bucks in tolls,(32 to bounce across the GW bridge) roads that will tax your suspension and TRAFFIC big time. The traffic didn't thin out untill we got to Rhode Island. Going back will be over the Newburgh bridge and through Penn.
On the plus side, the gas was cheapest on the Jersey Pike!

I use I 81 to I 78 too. IT is great and avoids so much traffic it is amazing.

Very pretty drive across Virginia and very scenic drive across PA and NY, no tolls, just a few speed traps.... Be careful on rt 17 in VA, they watch the speed pretty close there and it's so scenic, why hutty anyway...

We took that trip last year and avoided NYC completely. As other have said go into PA then I-84 into CT. It was a nice drive and no NY/NJ traffic. A few extra gallons of fuel, but more than saved that in tolls.
