Close but no cigar. With the high water levels from the rain most of the lakes have "NO WAKE" enforcement. Normally you can walk across Fox Lake by stepping from boat to boat but when we drove past yesterday I can safely say that there were less than 10% of the normal amount of boats on the water.
The Midwest is nice but having grown up in California I sure miss the variety of camping we had there. Around here there's no desert, no mountains, no ocean beach, just open prairie and lots more lakes but also lots more people.

We also have those really big and bad Earthquakes, Oh yes every once in awhile one of our big Mountains blow up. It's really not a very safe place to live, so better not come this way.

As Hobo mentioned there is considerable rain on the west side. All the rain causes those folks to get web feet and watered brains. Then they just sit around inside fancy buildings sipping yuppie drinks and dreaming up ways to make us east-siders miserable with their new rules and taxes.
Well, since the OP didn't define 'best', I'll assume that economics must play a part in all of this. You can't beat the west for free/cheap boondocking all year long. Don't know about the midwest, but I know there's not much/any BLM land in the NE.
We FT and have been in about 40 states so far. We find the west the most RV friendly third of the US. Space, climate, ... it's got it all.
Yeah, you probably wouldn't like it here.

Here also not so good..In Northern Ca (wine country) where we have lived for 35 years we have seen most of it by now. Problem is that it is difficult to get a spot at any of the many, many State and National parks here in the NW.
Much better you stay in the Midwest. I hear there is available space for that RV at the parks there.

Midwest the best area to own an RV? Not possible to get to do beach camping without spending a fortune in gas to get there? I don't think so.
I think it'd be impossible to say which state or region is necessarily 'best' or better than anywhere else, as far as camping destinations go. Too many variables involved.
People travel/camp for different reasons, some prefer longer trips, others prefer shorter. Some prefer boondocking or rustic state parks, others prefer resort style CGs with lots of amenities. Some like a little of both. We could go on and on with that.
Each one of us I'm sure, can throw up several reasons why we think where we live is best (like Supercharged 'tried' to do with this thread). And, it may well be true for the camping that individual wants to do. But, you just cannot say one particular area is all-around best, 'cause like I said, there's just too many variables in the way people camp, and the reasons they do.
..With gas being as expensive it is, I'd think the best place to be as far as camping goes, would be one that has lots of cool places to go for camping that one likes, that are not very far away. That could be west coast, east coast, or anywhere in between.
Personally, I can think of many, MANY different areas of the country I'd be happy living in, all that would offer lots of great places to camp.
(That being the case, Supercharged...please find something else to 'troll' over..hahahaha!)

Honestly we love Michigan for many reasons and one of them is the variety of things to do in our own state. Every vacation we take is actually in our own state. Going "up north" is a state of mind.
But the main reason we live in the midwest is because you can have a really nice 2000 sq ft home in a really nice part of town for $160K or less vs. half a million (if you're lucky) elsewhere. Plus this housing slump in terms of prices really doesn't effect you as much. Losing 10% value on that small price isn't as much as in California or other high end places. $500K around here will get you 4000+ sq ft on a lake with 2-5 acres easy.
Oh, and there are hundreds of campgrounds within a 2 hour drive, easily. Everything from the beach and sand dunes to dense woods and rivers to the local Walmart.
