I know I won't EVER put anything that resembles explosives in a van anymore,or at least not stop at the gas station on the way home
I had a BBQ propane bottle filled and put it in my van.
Pulled into the gas station and heard it leaking. Fire Department came to take it out of the vehicle, since it was near the pumps.
A little dramatic I thought but they put it in the middle of the highway, stopped all the traffic to defuse it. It probably was the safest way to do it though. Switched my BBQ over to a gas line from the house after that little experience.

I'm not a welder, but this question sprung to my mind, when I saw the tv footage on the BBC.
Welding trucks that I've seen usually have their Lincoln welders in the open pickup bed or flatbeds. Trucks carrying welding supplies, such as tanks, etc. always seem to be open stake beds, out here anyways.
To the non welder, such as myself, I've alway assumed from this observation that open trucks were used to prevent the build up of any gases in an enclosed space, like a van.
Some "Low end" welders may use the family van to tansport
One thing I did notice is that at the start of the article it mentioned Propane, and later acetylene. Though I suspect the latter gas. it's possible he did not properly shut it off.. It is also possible that he'd just re-filled the tanks when it was fairly cold and put 'em in the truck where temps may have exceeded 120 degrees. This could have caused a pressure release.. Then he gets in, with the gas/air already mixed, Lights up. and ... Well, makes the news.
Does he deserve a Darwin "Honorable Mention" (Since he survived) .. Yes. I suspect Wendy will give him one.
But it's for sure he's an idiot
