Ok. I need to vent.

We live in a nice small neighborhood. About 6 months ago, some teenagers started renting a home behind ours. The occassional loud party, a garage band with a drummer that needs more lessons, and the use of profane language emitting from their lanai.

This evening they begin shooting off fireworks. Started out with the beautiful fountains, and we thought great! They know it is to congested to be shooting off bottle rockets or mortars. NOPE!

About 10 minutes into their fireworks, I see sparks come through my pool cage(screen). We have had this screen room for 9 years, I have babied it, cleaned and maintained it so that it looks as good today as when it was installed. I marched my happy butt over to their house with their bottle rocket in hand. It did not matter to me that their was 10 or 11 cars parked there. I introduced myself to the three guys that reside there. They at first denied that they had shot it off and offered to let me see their trash of spent fireworks. I declined and told them, " You guys were the only ones shooting fireworks off within the distance to my residence(directly behind). Finally, they advised that they would take care of the repair. We shook hands on it and now I feel much better.

But man I was ticked! I thought it was best to go ahead and confront them while it was fresh. What would you have done?

I would have done the same thing! While we enjoy fireworks, and lighting them off, we don't enjoy it when irresponsible folks light them off in areas where damage to property can occur. You were right to go over there right away and nip it in the bud. It sounds like you handled it maturely and without screaming and shouting, as many would have done or been tempted to do.

Glad to hear that they stepped up to the plate and agreed to cover the repair!

Keep us posted! I would like to know if they actually come through with the repair. Unfortunately, a hand shake doesn't mean much anymore.

Call the police or sheriff's department to take care of it. Never take the Law into your own hands. You may have opened a can of worms in person, that may not be so pleasant as the days go by. Time will tell.

You know, that did cross my mind. Yet, I always hate hiding behind the police or anonymous letters when dealing with my neighbors. I have always been upfront with any issues that have ever popped up. Whether they have been at work or such as this in my neighborhood. I guess, if it were me, I would want my neighbors to come to me before calling the police.

But I asked, what others would do, so thanks for your response.

Well, I was going to say pretty much the same thing so I'll just quote Julie. We always believe in having an adult conversation first and that's exactly what you did. I think you handled it VERY well!! Sounds to me like it is going to have a good outcome.

I'd be more concerned about the loud parties and foul language. I would call the police because if I had gone over there to talk to them, something truly sad might've happened,.....on THEIR property (with the law on THEIR side).

Due to your description of the prior behavior, i.e., parties, etc., I probably would have called the police. I also like to handle things face-to-face when possible but avoiding a potentially dangerous confrontation should be taken into consideration.

I had a camper two down from me setting off fireworks in the RV campground last night. Hey it's cool, then one of the whistling buzzers went off and I hear a tap, tap of something falling on my roof, hey it's a fluke the thing just went off into the wrong direction. Then some type of rocket with a report went off and again I hear the tap, tap of something falling on my roof. That was enough, I went over to the explained that their fireworks were dropping on my roof. They said that they would quit and did. But you have to wonder about what they are thinking when so many RVs are in a close proximity of their fireworks and they are using a type that no way they can control where they will end up....I think by you going over there, there is risk to yourself, but now they will at least be responsible for their actions (hopefully) and pay for the damages. If you would have called the police. They will only write them a citation if there is a violation, that is witnessed by them or if you press charges yourself then you have to show intent....

And you are basing your assumption they are "thinking" on what?
