You know, that did cross my mind. Yet, I always hate hiding behind the police or anonymous letters when dealing with my neighbors. I have always been upfront with any issues that have ever popped up. I thought and did exactly as you're doing until the wrong neighbor was approached. The resultant grudge aftermath went on for months turning into years of harrassment. "Anonymous" beer bottles thrown at my home at odd hours of the day and night, endless trash dumping on my property, and drunken tirades of lewd language and horn-blowing at wee hours. You simply have no idea of the character and behaviors of all the people that you try to get to conform to acceptable societal norms. Oh sure you can always use veiled threats on people to get them to conform, but still, you never know if they'll be up for a good fight, even if you were right.

I thought it was best to go ahead and confront them while it was fresh. What would you have done?
Call the police or sheriff's department to take care of it. Never take the Law into your own hands. You may have opened a can of worms in person, that may not be so pleasant as the days go by. Time will tell.

But I asked, what others would do, so thanks for your response.

You did the right thing. Nothing wrong with neighbors handling disputes among themselves as long as you don't let it get out of hand. If it looked like it wasn't going to go well, you need to back off and go home, but it sounds like things went fine.
