2008 raptor 3612 equipped with an onan gold 5500 generator

initially the 15,000 btu air conditioner that came with the camper did fine until the temperature got above 95 degrees. to combat the issue i added an additional 13,500 btu air conditioner over the master bedroom. plugged into shore power this cools the camper now in any temperature (at least up to 115 degrees outside which is the hottest we've been in since adding the additional air conditioner).

trying to run both on the generator however resulted in tripping the breaker on the generator. to prevent this i rearranged the wiring in my fuse box so that the second air conditioner now pulls off the other leg on the generator.

now what i have works well except for when running both air conditioners off the generator when its above 100 degrees outside. while travelling back to montana from disney land we travelled through the desert in california, nevada, and arizona. the wifey rode in the camper with the dogs and kept complaining that the generator would run for 20 minutes or so and then turn itself off. after a few minutes the wifey would recrank the generator and all would be just fine for another 20 minutes or so.

i can only assume this is due to the heat but this is just not acceptable. we plan to boondock this summer and will leave the dogs in the camper while we are away. if the generator cut off like that the dogs would suffer and this isnt acceptable. what do i need to do in order to dependably run both air conditioners off my generator in desert heat?
thanks,

Nathan in Montana

Well lucky you.

You are running (2) 13,500. He is trying to run (1) 15,000 and (1) 13,500, more load than what you have. He also did not indicate what other loads he has on genset power.

He also indicated he was running gen power while traveling. This may improve genset cooling or it may hinder the cooling, I'd would think hinder in a 5th wheel going down the road.

Genset runs both a/c fine under 100 degrees?

check for fault code 36 had the same problem on the news vans they get hot and vapor lock the fuel systems. we had to change their gensets to EFI gensets to keep fuel circulating to keep it cool but will still vapor lock once and a while when temps get over 100 outside.

if you check the installation manual there is a recirculation air test that must be performed that will tell you if you have an overheat condition.

hello,
yes both units run fine on the generator up to around 100 degrees. over 100 degrees they run for 20 minutes or so and then the generator shuts down. i havent yet tried it when the camper is parked because so far ive had shore power when parked. this has just been while travelling.

where do i find the fault code?

I would put the wiring back to original and contact the manuf. and/or dealer. It should not be trippng. Even with a 15K and a 13.5K a/c. Its no different than running both roof units and the microwave at the same time.

Our 5500 runs both units fine. Even when boondocking with MW and both AC's as well as the coffee maker and elect. skillet...

Good luck and keep us posted.

doing this puts two air conditioners on a single 25 amp circuit. this just isnt enough to run one and start another. it will trip every time.
