we have m/s street and trips -works pretty good bought in 06 .

i wonder if any upgrades are available or would you suggest a different system???

it has taken us a few wrong turns but does get us out of trouble if we make a wrong turn which we did in downtown portland or.

it got us out and back to the address we needed.

we like to use the laptop with the gps as you have it on a big screen.

any suggestions

thanks

We use Delorme Street Atlas USA, and update it every year. We too prefer the bigger screen of the laptop. No GPS mapping is perfect, which is why it's essential to proof the route the GPS creates to make sure it doesn't route you over some ex-forest road. At least on the computer you can more easily tweak the route. We use a windshield-mount Magellan in the TOAD (should have got a Garmin), but I don't like the inability to tweak the route.

The DeLorme LT-40/2009 combo that came out this year is a big step up from earlier DeLorme LT-20/2006 which I preferred to Streets and Trips 2006. It's about $70 any day and it's worth just paying it if you need it now.

Laptop Cube
DeLorme is definitely our choice for the RV. It calculates end of day and fuel stop needs. I'll check the route for low clearance problems against the Trucker's Atlas before I leave. I will also tag rest stops in case we need to walk the dog or want a quick stop to prepare lunch.

Our Garmin nuvi is good for the toad when all we want to do is jump in the car and go somewhere. I don't care for it for directing the RV. Occasionally it wants you to exit the interstate and then get back on at the end of the exit... strange!

I use 2006 S&T also. Works pretty well in my opinion. Pretty robust, lots of settings and I have imported in various data files; Flying J's, Cracker Barrels, Walmarts (ooh noo ) and made them their own icons. I 've read about enhancements in the '07 version, not enough to make me switch.

Another option is CoPilot Live, I have version 10. I had the opportunity to buy it for $50 a while back with a code posted here on RV.net. Cool thing about it, already has propane and height restrictions built in, so all you do it set the requirement and it will route that way.

I haven't used it much though, got too used to S&T

So right you are!
I run it on a laptop with a 17" screen.

The newest version has a lot of enhancements including being Bluetooth compatible
The navigation mode is an improvement and the new integrated phone number look-up, address tab is also nice.

I also run DeLorme TOPO which also runs with LT-40 GPS Receiver or, I can map and then download to my DeLorme PN-20 Handheld GPS

I use S&T myself.. The only complaint I have is their idea of "Fastest Route" is often.. anything but.

I've used Rand McNally's product and found it about the same (Though there are a few things I like about it better)

Delorme gets good reviews as does Co-Pilot live once you learn it.

But I'd stick with the product you know

I do like the larger screen of my laptop over what I see in stand-along GPS units

There have been so many advances in GPS in the last few years. Both in stand alone units and in software for your laptop and they are all very good and so much better than a few years ago. I have a built-in PC with a touch screen on the dash and am running Co-Pilot 10 by ALK. I also have "DeLorme" and "Streets and Trips" installed but seem to always go back to Co-Pilot. It has RV/truck settings for clearences etc.

I have had 5 GPS systems in the past few years. Factory installed in my '05 Jeep Grand Cherokee had to be replaced on warranty twice due to failure of Joy Stick control. System is fairly accurate, Factory installed Oioneer in my '06 Mountainaire is fairly good but does make a few mistakes so you have to check route, Factory installed in our 06 Prius works best of all factory units. Also own a Nuvi we purchased before the Prius for around $500 a few years ago, an excellent unit.

The new Black Berry Phone I just got from AT&T is by far the easiest and most up to date GPS so far. They continually update as part of the service and the ease of using voice to control the unit is superb. I am Turning the Blackberry over to my wife next week when I get the New IPhone. Will report on the GPS system as soon as we use it.

I first started using DeLorme. When they changed their look, I wasn't happy. I looked at and frequently use S&T but I still have both. I prefer the look of S&T but I like the mapping stragegy of DeLorme. The earlier posts are right: the quickest route sometimes isn't when it comes to S&T.

As much as I've used DeLorme, I still have a little trouble negotiating through it since they changed the look.
