Getting ready for our two week vacation next week and after changing the oil and filter in my F53 was ready to recharge my air filter and I cleaned it at am letting it dry overnight. I have read on these forms that you can over do it and get to much oil on these filters and mess up a air censor or something. My question is how do you know when you have enough oil on it. I have the oil in a bottle and it states to run down each crevice till pink Any one who has done this and survived the process I would like to hear from you . Last if the air censor light would go on is it going to hurt to keep driving it till I get to my campground or not. Thanks

I think you would have to really over do it to damage the air censor.
Just spray a good coat on the filter. After sitting for a few minutes any areas that don't have enough will look light. If you happen to get too much on any areas you can alwaysm blot it with a paper towel.

The color should be very uniform across the filter. Depending on which size filter there are supposed to be so many ounces of oil used on the filter, if you exceed or don't get the filter covered with the set amount, start over.
Yes it can mess up your MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor, and yes it does affect your air/fuel mixture. It want destroy your engine, but your performance/MPG will terrible, if it will run, sometimes the engine will stall fram a bad MAF sensor. The sensor can be replaced, they cost anywhere from $17.00 to 125.00 depending on vehicle.
Good luck.

I have been using this type of filter for years.
1) Clean the bugs and any other stuff from the filter before you wash it.
2) Spray a liberal amount of cleaner on the filter and let it stand for 15 or 20 mins. Now slosh up and down in a bucket of water. Toss ou the dirty water and replace with clean and repeat until all the cleaner is rinsed out. Let dry overnight.
3) I use the red oil. Spray a coat of oil on the filter and let set overnight. This will allow the oil to "wick" into the gauze. If it is a light pink then add another coat. It should be a bright red not dark red.
If you have a round filter that clamps on to a tube you can use you shop vac to test for over oiling. Just take a piece of cardboard that covers the filter, cut a hole in it for the vac hose and let run for about 10 mins. Now look at the shop vac hose.
The MAF can be cleaned with CRC MAF Cleaner. DO NOT use brake or carb cleaner as it will eat up the plastic and probably ruin the IAT probe and/or sensor wires.
I bought a NEW MAF cleaner off EBAY for $26 for my 8.1l Vortec.

I skip all of the above and just buy a new OEM filter. Not only is it easier, but I have better filtration and longer engine life.

Air Filter Test
I wonder what the advantage is going to the K&N, Seems like a lot of trouble and turning back time. I remember having to clean and reoil the vintage oil bath air cleaners. What a messy job!

My son gave me a birthday gift of a K&N filter for my toad last year. I felt about the same way that 'Jerry B' does, but installed it anyway.

Air Filter Test After reading this test data, I see that our suspicions are confirmed.
(Now, if we could just get this kind of real data on those Air-Tabs....

There is a belief that the K&N filters can pass more air than a standard paper filter... (At least that is what they say) with little, if any, reduction in filter performance. Others say the reduction in filter performance is great and that the problem the OP mentioned is common
I've spoken with a lot of folks who use K&N under some rather nasty conditions, have done so myself, no I mean ZERO evidence that the filter is not doing it's job 100% The oil catches the dirt just fine
And I have yet to read one message from someone who had sensor problems because of it..
NOTE: This does not mean that these problems don't exist, only that I've not read about them
(Of course the last subject where I made a statement someone promptly completed my education by posting an problem report)

Thanks for the quick responses I did over do it and had to let it sit on paper and the oil keep coming out . Let it set for a few hrs in till no more red oil came out of bottom. . Mine is like a turbine so it was hard to tell how much oil was going in . It was a bright red and covered well over the whole filter . I think before we go on Thursday I will pull it out and check to see if there is any oil sitting in or around the tube. Thanks again for all your help
