Yesterday we started on a trip up to Iowa for the Country coach Rally, then on to Idaho and Oregon. We had a nice run from the North Georgia mountains over to Birmingham to visit some family last night before running up I65 today on our way to Iowa. This morning, as we were preparing to hook up the tow car, I noticed the check engine light was on so I shut down and checked the oil, the coolant etc. and found no problems. Starting the engine again, I let it run while watching all the guages for temp, oil pressure etc. All normal. The Coach is a 2007 Country Coach Affinity with the 600 cummins. Reading up on the check engine light condition, the book advises that the light is connected to the engine computer which monitors coolant level and "various other engine associated items". The coolant level is fine so it is something else. If you have read this far, I thank you for your patience. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience to share with me on this issue. I am not if we should proceed to the rally where there will be Country Coach service available or stay here until I can get someone to check this out. What would you do?

You will need to have the engine computer plugged into a diagnostic machine that can read the codes being generated by the computer. That is the only way I know of to find out what is causing the light to come on. It could just be a bad sensor, or it could be something more serious, however, since all your gauges are reading "normal" it seems more likely it is not serious. Needs to be diagnosed though, if for no other reason than your peace of mind.

I have never had the check light come on the MH. Usually, it has something to do with the emissions control on an auto. The air mixture is monitored so check your vaccumn indicator if you haven't put a new air cleaner on lately. It could be partially plugged and not letting the turbo pull enough air. Just a thought. If all the gauges are showing normal, I would continue to drive mine.

Does the manual give you any way to manually pull/Read the codes? Sometimes you can short across the plug of the OBD port or turn key 5 times will read codes out onto the dash? Or just stop at an Auto parts store and hopefully they will scan it for you. AutoZone will do it, Complicated process to use it but ends up free. Then once you know what the code is decide how important, or clear it out and see if it comes back again. Sometimes can be as simple as gas cap wasnt tight.

A piece of black tape over the light works real good or take the bulb out if you can find it, most of the time it is a sensor, I would go ahead and drive it, just watch your gages and you will be fine,,,

I would continue on to my next destination. The fault or sensor that set the code may clear on its own after a drive cycle. You did the correct thing and check all fluids and gauges.

I have been driving my jeep around for 3years with the check engine light on. My diesel pickup sets off the check engine lite every time I jump on the go pedal thanks to all the performance stuff I have added to it.

Fred,
Somewhere in your various coach manuals, there should be one for the Cummins engine. It should show you how to extract the codes using the check engine lamp and your cruise control switches. Not too hard to do, just count the flashes, for example a series of 3 flashes followed, by a pause, and 3 more flashes would mean code 33 which you should be able to view a description for in the Cummins book. There should also be an 800# for Cummins Coach Care to answer questions.
Good luck!

A number of sensors can cause a "check engine" lamp. One common one relates to the fuel system and is caused by a loose cap on the fuel inlet.

Many alarms will persist (even if the cause is cleared) until the computer is "reset". Try disconnecting your battery for a few minutes (15 or 20) and reconnect. This will often clear the computer and if the alarm comes up again, the probelem still exists.

I don't know if the following "hint" is true for all vehicles, but once when I had OnStar investigate a "check engine" light, in the course of the conversation the operator told me that a "steady" light generally indicates a less serious problem which "you should take the car to a dealer soon" and that a "blinking" light means "serious problem, shut down and call a tow truck".
