In a few weeks our son is moving to northeast Raleigh to attend Southeastern Seminary. Before his family arrives we need to help do some home improvements -- painting, cleaning, etc. We can't stay in his house because we have a mini Schnauzer that he's allergic to (and DH will not board the dog). Really need to take the MH down, but so far we haven't been able to come up with any campgrounds in the area. Have checked Woodalls with no success. Anyone know of anywhere (besides WalMart) that can accommodate a big rig for a few days? Thanks! Any help is appreciated!

I have read that folks like the RV sites at the Raleigh Fairground. I think they are pretty cheap but without amenities other than elec/sewer. Might work for your situation. Sorry don't know how to contact other than search for the fairground office.
I have seen these sites & they can accomodate big rigs. Used for folks traveling in for events.

We use to live in the area and before we moved I took a few pics of the NC State Fairground sites -- you can see them here.

I stayed at the State Fairgrounds in March. The sites have full hookups and while certainly not spacious they are good for using as a base while touring (or working as I was) in the area. Make sure you have extra water hose, 30/50 amp cable and sewer hose as in some cases it is a stretch to get to the utilities. All in all it's fine for a base camp.

We have stayed at the fairgrounds twice while our daughter was at Rex hospital (close by). During the week, no problem. But on flea market days
(Saturday/Sunday), there are a lot of unsavory types in the area and they get to the fairgrounds at 4-5 AM to set up. Believe me, you too will be up at this time when they arrive, as they line up to enter the grounds via the camping area.
There is a fairly nice campground in Selma, on I95, about 20 miles to the east. The only negative is the road noise, but you can negate that with your A/C fan.
You have easy access to I40 to travel to Raleigh. The owners are very nice and the area is safe and clean.
Hope this helps.

The Selma CG is RVacation. It's about 30 miles southeast of Raleigh. We would often stay here 1 night on our trips south on I-95 just to get a jump on the weekends. Also a popular over night place for other forum members.

This is the route you'd want to take to get to Raleigh from this area..

To I-40. A longer drive for you -- especially if you need to be in North Raleigh each day.

Falls Lake

We are just back from a stay a Holly Point, part of Falls Lake State Rec Area. Loved it. $20/night, water, elec, dump station. Gates close at 9:00 pm, re-open at 8 am. Our end (the 100's) was always quiet, the other end (the 70's (?)) was FULL on the weekend. The beach on our end was just about always deserted. The park is a camper only area-no day use patrons. We hope to return there for a real vacation in November.

We were in a situation somewhat similar to yours. We were moving the FIL from his town house to a retirement community. While we didn't like it at the time, in retrospect the 9 pm gate closing was a good thing. It kept us from the usual break neck pace of such endeavors.

I guess I may as well mention the following...
When doing a Google search to find the above link for you, I found that the beaches were closed for a while soon after we were there-a bacteria scare. In any case, we swam there and had no ill effects. Falls lake is the water supply for Raleigh, so I expect that watch such things pretty carefully.

We visited the flea market at the fair grounds while we were there. Pretty zooy and wide open. I wouldn't want to stay there after being tucked away in the woods at Holly Point.

Good luck to you and your son.

Sage
