Do we need to make reservations, or can we book a place to camp when we get there? We are leaving in mid July, about 2 weeks from now. I was thinking it may not be as busy this year with fuel prices so high. If we do need reservations maybe we could get some info on nice rv parks from you, our fellow rv'ers.

Do you want FHU in a private RV park, or are you planning to stay in the National Park campgrounds?

We just got back from Yellowstone (stayed at Fishing Bridge) and yes, I think you will want reservations. Fishing Bridge RV park was full everyday we were there and there were quite a few folks around.
I do think you could have gotten into some of the non-hookup sites in Yellowstone or you might want to check at the parks in West Yellowstone.
Have a great time.

Yes, you will need reservations if you are staying within the park. We stayed at Fishing Bridge and we had to make the reservations way ahead of time of departure.

Went to Yellowstone in September 2006. We did not need reservations outside the park. By the second week of September it is getting cold and we had snow and sleet one day. Grizzly Campground in West Yellowstone stayed about 2/3 rds. full while we were there for two weeks. July and August are almost impossible if you want full hook-ups and haven't made earlier reservations, unless you get lucky with a cancellation. If you want a place inside the park there usually are a couple of spaces that come available on a first come first served basis. But, you had better be there very early to have a shot on any vacancies that arise.

Am rookie to the forum but seems like an appropriate thread to volley a few "Yellowstone" questions. My wife, 4 kids and I are headed there in a few weeks and know that we won't be there long enough (4-5 days) and to that end want to learn from any mine-field experiences that you more experienced folk may have relative to the joys and pitfalls of motorcoach travel in that area so our trip is max-fun.
We have two days reserved in Fishing Bridge (that's all we were able to reserve) and thought we'd stay off park the balance. Any positive experience suggestions (family friendly RV parks) and on the flip side...any places you would avoid?
Same general question for the Mt. Rushmore area. Heading through there on the way home.
thanks!
