We just received our 2009 Travelstar 21SSO and are very excited to take it out for the first time but do have a question for those that have slides.
We noticed above the slide on the inside that there are (2) dummy bars that i assume are there to prevent the slide from extracting during travel,uh...what happens if one of the kids push the slide button before they are removed ...i have a visual.
Are they necessary?

I don't have them on the slide on my Winnebago.....the fittings are there, but I don't know what ever happened to the "dummy bars"....gone before we purchased. I've already put a thousand miles on the RV, and nothing has moved. I wouldn't worry. Of course, on this Class C, I have to have the Emergency Brake "ON" in order to operate the slide! Nice safety feature.

There has been some animated discussion in the past about the transit bars.
Some trailer slide motors have mechanisms which prevent the slide from moving during transit. Others perhaps need the bars more.
However, I am of the 'proper planning beats poor performance' and 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' idealogy.
I do not want to be going down the road and observing my slide in the fast lane of opposing traffic although I do think I would know it was happening but by then it could be too late.
As far as young ones activating the slide, that is always a possibility with or without the bars in. I know I have rushed around once or twice and forgot what step I was on before I hit the switch. Heck if there were no bars in but the trailer was right next to a pole the outcome may not be good either.
It is all about choices.

The Slide Locks are really up to the individual person. I personally wouldn't put them in. Just because I know they are another thing to forget before you put the slide out and possibly damage the interior. We all have our own look at it, if you are very meticulous and have a checklist that you follow it might be okay. But the damage my son might cause is not worth the effort to me. I do not install the locks.

We use our bars and I attached a label above the slide switch to remind us to remove the bars before extending. Seems to work for us.

I think you're going to find the forum is split 50-50 on this one. If it came with them I'd put them in. I have a hard time believing the manufacturer would just throw them in as a door prize.

We also have a 21SSO that came with the bars. We use them for most of the reasons stated above (they must have provided them for some reason!)
Borrowing from the world of aviation ("remove before flight" flags) we attached long red ribbons - about two inches wide - with a rubber band to each bar. The ribbons hang over the top edge of the slide and are very obvious when the bars are in place.
It isn't fool-proof but so far so good!

our Roo came with them and had orange warning tags attached to them.

Ours came with them also. And we too had a piece of paper taped over the switch labled "Remove Bars."
But we found out the bars would fall out anyway during travel. So we don't bother with them & haven't had an issue with the slide moving on its own.

dealer told me the bars mostly serve to insure proper "seal" at the top of the slide during transit ...
seems to make sense.
I use them and our switch is mounted too high for the kids to activate.
