You can't take the Fisherman out of this Camper wrote: Trying to talk you down to a half ton??? Lol... you (or the salesman) must be kidding!! No way... No way... No way.... I could go on............
We're several thousand dollars upside down on the X (no kidding, right?) and this is his way of making a sale because they can't meet our demands on the price of a 2008 F-250 combined with his offer on our Excursion. I think we'll hold out.
Upside down according to WHO? KBB? NADA? Dealer wholesale, or Dealer Retail? Private party value? There are so many different numbers out there that you could be even or possibly a little to the good, depending on where you look!
Any decent dealer can make a trade-in work, as long as you aren't grossly upside-down, like owing $20,000 on a $10,000 vehicle. You might have to give up any "incentives" to get the deal done, but a GOOD finance manager can do it.
If it were me, I would go find a dealer who is more interested in selling me what I want, and less in what he thinks I need. But then, if it were me, I would be in a Dodge dealership, not a Ford dealership. But, that's just me.

Why in the world is the salesman trying to talk you "down"? Never heard of that. Get a new dealer or insist on a new salesman at that dealer, or better yet, buy what you want because so many salesman really don't know what they are talking about! Some do, to be sure, but many don't!

I had a dealer try to do the same. Wanted to sell me a 1500, but was calling it a 3/4 ton. They only had 1500s on the lot and refused to order the truck I wanted. Went across the street and ordered one. (I found out the reason very few 2500s (F250s) are in stock in my area is because buyers of 2500s have very specific desires and will not budge on what they want so it has to be ordered.)
NEVER underbuy a truck for towing purposes. better to have a little more than you need than a little less. check out the numbers. obviously they are overstocked on 150s.

Yup.
There's HUGE inventory of unsold F-150s lying around.
The launch of the all-new 2009 F150 has been delayed because of it...they need to get rid of the old model so that the new model has a chance of success. In this tough market, the best-selling status - and profit center - that was synonymous with the F-150 is no longer a given.

I was happy towing 6500 lbs with a 2wd 1/2 ton, but no way would I ever add 2000 lbs more and then hit the road. Safety, reliability and fuel mpg will all be in the toilet.

Have you tried to trade in an nine year old Excursion with six figures on the odometer? No? Well, I spoke to three dealers that wouldn't even take my truck as a trade in, much less give me my loan value for it.
The value of my trade has shut down any talk in my family about upgrading to new. But I did see an 04 V-10 Excursion with less than 70,000 miles for under $15,000 on Autotrader....
You tell the dealer what YOU want and need, don't ever let them tell you. I tow a loaded 7500lb trailer with an F-150 and it does fine as I've done some mods, but I still have one eye out for deal on an F250. If I had a 3/4 ton I would definitely NOT ever consider a 1/2 ton. Better too much truck than not enough. I didn't have a TT when I bought my F-150 so I didn't have much use for a F-250, but man do I regret buying a half ton. Although my F-150 tows it okay, I don't have the ability to do a nice long trip someday 800+ miles.
