Shirley - after reading your post I realized (again) why we like the Valley. Life at home seems so boring, although we are busy, it's just not the same. We don't seem to "play" as much at home. We miss our Valley friends as well.

We spent our first winter in RGV last year...liked it SOOOO much we bought a lot in Mission. Right now I'm so homesick for "our little slice of heaven" I can't wait to get back there in October.
As for being safe...I've never felt safer. As a matter of fact, the person who said "they really respect their elders", was spot on! Last year we were at a Lowe's store, bought a vanity to put in our little "casita". We had it on a flat bed, and my DH and myself were about to lift it into the back of the pickup. There was a carload of young hispanic people, mid-twenties I'd guess. The driver, who was about to get in his car, stopped, walked over and asked if we needed help...we were stunned...nowhere have we ever seen young people so willing to help us "older" adults!!! They couldn't have been more polite or respectful. Helped DH put it in the truck and expected nothing in return...it was extremely refreshing!!
Can't wait to get "home"!!

After reading all the great posts on this topic, now I'm getting fired up to head south. We are going to be in Mission, like many others, and looking forward to meeting as many of you as we can. We will be pulling our 5r down in October and leaving it there untill we can return after Christmas. We plan on staying until early March, then we will head up to the Kerrville area for a month at Buckhorn RV Resort. Hang in there everyone and make good use of these great summer and fall months.

Sharon & I are spending the summer here and it is quiet, but we've found that several of the Winter Texans are staying instead of going north this year. Most site the fuel costs, and we are finding more to do than we thought, but we do miss the busy season.
Come on down, let's get this party started.

Does anyone know if there are better or worse places for singles? Not looking for a partner, just don't want to be "odd one out" all the time.

I have met many single Winter Texans and most Parks have activities geared toward the singles.
I know the Park we stay at is Victoria Palms and they seem to have an active singles group.

We are on Chapter 11 in the book of doing nothing. I find it is difficult to do nothing while in RGV but I am reasonably successful. If it wasn't for music and my wife I would be considered a statue. I do expect petty theft to be more common this year. But that is anywhere and locks (and/or shotguns ) seem to deter most of it.

Funny that you mention petty theft. Yesterday I watched a middle age lady stop in front of my house, get out of her relatively new pickup and take decorator stones from my neighbor's front yard. I challenged her and she placed the stones back and left. I made police report for the record. This morning I saw police 2 houses down from me. Don't know if it was theft or what.

If you spend much time in the valley you know about the common system of acquiring needed supplies. Scout the area during garage sales, return later to see if what you saw earlier is still outside and grab it and split. Most every day after the Val Verde flea market there is petty theft, and sometimes not to petty, in the area. It is common in other areas of flea markets also. During the summer (off season months) various homes are commonly broken into and things of value are taken. I've had locked bicycles taken--apparently the thieves had acquired bolt cutters in a previous spree. Motion lights help when someone is around to be alerted but if no one is home all it does is make it easier to see how to break in. It is something we live with. I do expect more because those types will be out scouting in the damaged areas and no one will consider it unusual to see sightseers. Good luck with the police report, they are polite, understanding and no time for petty theft.
