What do you want, 40 mpg towing????? These are the laws of physics and the energy contained in the fuel...Bucking sounds weird tho...Our Dodge will get 8.5 to over 11.... The best way to get better mpg is to SLOW DOWN!!!! I drive under 55 and will get over 11.... at 65 we get under 10 or even under 9!!!!..

Your mileage sucks. I get 22 running empty and the mileage increases as I add weight for towing. If I had a dodge instead of a 7.3 psd i am sure it would be better.

Yeah right lol. You been listening to as lot of El Toro poo poo. I get 11 with my 99 psd towing if I m driving in a big butt tail wind. It gets 17.5 empty with the cruise on. The secret to getting super mileage is being bad ast arithmetic or just figuring it up in your head, and don't hesitste to brag about how great it is.

As far as the light front end, it sounds like you may be running butt low. I can turn the wheel loose on my F250 and don't have to swet it. Except when trailer turck buzzes by at 80.

So now that we got the mileage fixed all that is left is the front end.

Your mileage sounds about right, your steering box may need to be tightened for the wander - it's a known issue on the Superduty - especially if it's a high miler.

Looks like a good thread for me. My current TV (see below) gets 7-8 towing, 10-11 not. I'm looking at a couple of 2002 Excursions, 7.3 PSD, with less than 85K miles. Am I unrealistic to expect 12-13 mpg (7500# TT) towing, 17-18 not, and life expectancy of 250K + miles? I KNOW diesel is higher, but it's only 20% higher, and I don't anticipate any reduction anytime soon. MPG could be as much as 50% higher. I've never had a diesel, but the math seems to work. It seems that there are a number of aftermarket add-ons that could help out as well. Still learning about diesels. Would appreciate any input on my idea.

We just got back from a 400 mile, one way trip,
and we averaged 11.5 MPG.
I checked it with my calculator to be accurate
as we are leaving on a 1800 mle vacation in less
than two weeks and wanted to check it for figuring
up our diesel fuel expense.

I get 7 - 9 towing, and 12 - 14 not towing. You are doing good.

You think 10-12 mpg while towing 13K is "poor"? Come on, what do you expect? Seriously, your mileage is right where it is expected. Both loaded and loaded. My 01 Dodge gets 15 or so around town, 19 when all freeway and 10-12 while towing my 13-14K 5ver. Right in line with just about everyone else.

FWIW - I had a 97 chevy gasser that got 14 city, 19 hwy but only around 9 when towing 6K

Bottom line...you are fine.

Your milage is in line with mine. My 5th weights about 12,000. I do not have the towing problems you are having. My truck pulls the rig well but I'd never say "I can't tell it's back there" since it takes much longer to stop and get up to speed after stopping, not mention the difference when climb a hill.
