I converted my YZ450 to the Motion Pro twist and I love it, has absolutely changed it from "i hate that f'n thing" to "I love to ride the quad". It has, however, made the quad something that only I can ride. I've tried letting two other people ride it in 2 years, it put both of them on their butt. You need to be used to a twist throttle and riding motorcycles. It has NEVER caused me a problem and you frequently see them on racing quads but novice riders should stay away.

pronstar - Who makes a combo unit? I'd be really interesting in checking one of those out, it's a little bit of a hassle having to tell everyone they can't ride or borrow my quad...

Don't take life too seriously, it's not permanent.

My buddy rode a quad with a twist throttle, front end came up and he kept on twisting.
Ended up tweaking his back pretty good when he flipped the quad.
I say no to twist throttles on a quad.

I put twist throttles on every 3-wheeler I've owned. They're very easy to use without getting out of control if you're not already used to a thumb throttle. I was never used to the thumb ones.

The first twist I had on the ATC was a very long twist, I had to re-grip the throttle to go from closed to fully open. I switched to a quicker, shorter twist rate and that was much better. Motion Pro makes good ones.

Just like on a dirtbike, learn to let off the throttle and you won't be going over the back of the bike. Sometimes it takes a few accidents to teach yourself what not to do. Same goes with putting your foot down on a quad or 3-wheeler. Run over your foot a time or two and your brain will remember not to put the foot down anymore. LOL

I have had twist throttles on all my quads and three wheelers. Back in the day the Kawasaki three wheelers came form the factory with twist. Since I have ridden dirt bikes my entire life, it seems natural for me to use a twist. I have also ridden many ATVs with a thumb throttle and can never seem to get used to it. For me it just seems unnatural to use a thumb throttle.

I have heard much speculation over the years that I was a ATV safety instructor as to why the industry standard is now a thumb throttle. I don’t know that I have ever heard from a manufacturer as to why they use thumb.

As with anything involved with power and potential death or injuries…Use caution and common since. If a twist throttle seems “weird” or “different” than what you are used to riding then proceed with caution or don’t ride it. If you loan you ATV to any one make sure they are given instructions on anything that may be different than what they are used to riding (not just a throttle type). Even “experienced riders” can be surprised by something different.

Comes down to personal preference for throttle type.
For me it is twist.
My wife it is twist (because of carpal tunnel issues.)
My kids it is thumb (because they don’t have a preference yet and that is what comes on the quad)

My kids will start riding two wheelers this year so that will introduce then to a twist set up and maybe eventually to a twist on their quads.

My BIL just put a combo throttle on their quads...my nieces and sister got thumb cramps. You can switch from twist to thumb on the fly without tools, all you do is flick a little lever.

Might be a good solution for you.

I had the Terry combo unit on my quad. It was good at first, however, after about a year, it wore out. When it was in the "thumb" selection, just holding on tight to the grip would give it a little gas (the twist throttle would engage.)

It does sound like a good idea, and it was nice at first, but this is something to be aware of. I have since switched back to the thumb only model.

I will never go back to a twist throttle. I have the Motion Pro on my 400ex and love it. It it much easier to shift, smoother accerlation and a must for long rides.

You mean "thumb throttle"?

I have twist on all my quads; switched each of them out before the 1st ride.

Hey, I would love to have a twist throttle on my Polaris 700. How does a twist throttle work with the electronic control that prevents stuck open throttles?

I have been riding a quad with a twist throttle for 20 years. It is more comfortable to me than a thumb throttle. I have never looped it over due to the twist throttle. Try one you can always switch it back. Good Luck!

I have been riding motorcycles of some kind most of my life and I don't get it.

Could someone explain here in this forum why twist throttles are not used standard on both 2 wheelers and quads?

Are thumbs are safer for quads so you can release the handle bar grip in tense situations?

Seems to me on a quad, it's safer to momentarily release the grips as you don't need to balance as much to stay upright, as you do need to do on a moto. Thus, it would seem to me that twist grips used for decades on motos would be even SAFER on a quad.
