Will the 42'MH make the 750km gravel road to Inuvik? Will it just fall apart?

I did about 40 trips on the Dempster with an MCI with never so much as a flat tire. It paid to duct-tape seal the belly storage bays to keep out the dust, though.

The weather plays a big part when driving to Inuvik via the Dempster. On our way north it had rained and we had long stretches of gooey black mud - really fun to clean up! Coming south the following week, it was very dusty + the air was smoky from forest fires. We only encountered a couple of M.H. - most often we saw truck campers (what we had), and small class B & C. Getting a broken windshield is a concern from the flying gravel. We almost made it until about 30 miles from the end a transport went flying past us - we pulled over and stopped, but it didn't do any good and a rock provided us with a souvenir of our trip - one we could have done without. The trip was a real experience and I'm very glad we did it and have the t-shirt to prove it!

Tuk is short for Tuktoyaktuk. On Google Maps zoom to the 50 km scale and find the mouth of the McKenzie River. Tuk is on the Arctic Ocean somewhat to the east of the main triangular part of the delta. Also if you turn on the photo feature, you'll find a photo of the town.

There is also a photo of the igloo shaped church in Inuvik (to the south).

This NWT map shows the ice road out of Inuvik, but not the branches to the drill sites.

It may be hard to find the other sites. They are temporary gas drilling sites, not towns if I remember correctly. Other possible sources of information are the Wiki article on the Ice Road Truckers, and the relevant History Channel page.

Also, this is the web site for MGMEnergy who is conducting those exploration operatations:

MS streets and trips 'knows' where Tuk is - even shows a road - but does not explain that from Inuvik on it is only there in winter - the Ice Road!

OK I have found Tuck and Inuvik. I was looking for Langley Island where the Langley drill site is suppose to be.

I even tried Google Earth. SO I guess I have found just what everyone else has.

Hope Alex pulls through. He is my favorite driver.

I went to Toporama, Canada's topographic map source, and did a search for 'Langley Island'

You can zoom in to get more detail

OK thanks. Now I have a better idea where they are running.
They show a map on the program but not much detail. AS for the Ice Road Truckers site not much there either.

Search tip:

go to www, google.ca, click in the circle for pages from Canada and put in your search term.

BTW cruiserjs, route 500 is to be completed in gravel form for 2009. & Quebec is working on extending the road along the north shore of the St. Lawrence.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.
