Before retirement, the correctional facility I ran was smoke free. We went to a smoke free environemnt about 20 years ago, and it was not an issue. Since inmates did not have access to cigarettes, they just stopped smoking without incident. When newly arrested inmates were introduced to the facility, they instantly became non-smokers. Since they had no control over their access to cigarettes, they accepted non-smoking. It is your free will to access cigarettes that causes any "stop smoking" effort to fail. Every one of my inmates were non smokers.

I too tried Chantix to stop smoking about a year ago and although it helped me to stop for a week and a half I ended up having terrific nightmares from using it and I had to stop because the nightmares were getting worse each night and I was getting no sleep whatsoever.. Now that I'm using "COMMIT" I haven't had nightmares or any other reactions in my effort to kick the habit...I highly recommend "COMMIT" as it's working beautiful for me..The snow man..

You can do it! I smoked a pack-and-a-half a day for 17 years. By the grace of God, I finally quit 19 years ago...

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!
I quit 5 years ago. I had quit once for 1 year 20 years prior, and made a few weak stabs at it since then. I started Wellbutrin / Zyban and decided to quit. It was so much easier. For me, it was a mind-set that I had to get into. When I had "urges" I would tell myself "yes, I have an urge. Isn't that interesting?" And a few seconds later it would be gone. Those urges kept getting further and further apart, but I still get them once in a while five years later....Isn't that interesting? lol.
Now, I absolutely refuse to give up my red wine, so don't even try....

Hey I got some of that two bottles for one red stuff at Winn Dixie,that red stuff is nasty.But glad to see you kicked the cigs.

Chantix works, were both on 8 months now,11/28/07 and it was easy, and now we both hardly even think about it any more, and never really did. Talk to your Dr about it. Then go buy stock in that company with the money you save.

I already posted but tonight I went to Albertsons for two steaks and then next door to the liquor store and there was a 40 year old or so women paying for a bottle and two packs of Salems. They were $4.10 each and she questioned the amount as if she couldn't afford it. The young male cashier, repeated the price, she paid, and left. I told him that I had quit ten years before and he said he sees so many people buying smokes that can't afford it. He held up a pack and said "You can buy a meal for what this costs". I had never thought of it that way but it is true; you can buy either fast food or a dinner of beans, rice and vegetables for $4.00 for a family of four for what a pack of name brand smokes cost.
How sad.

Here in Massachusetts, the Governor added a $1.00 to the cigarette tax. I do not smoke, but if I did I would definitely try to quit.

A serious suggestion... If y'all are trying to quit, start monitoring your blood pressure. I quit twice (2nd time stuck) after 30+ years of 2-3 packs a day. I had small strokes soon after both times. My BP, which had always been borderline high, had gone thru the roof. Purely by luck, I've mostly recovered from the stokes. And I haven't had a ciggy in almost 6 years. But keep an eye on your BP; you can get a DIY monitor for ~$30 at any drugstore or MalWart.
