We will be traveling from Tulsa to the Rocky Mountain National Park then to Yellowstone National Park and also Tetons.

My question is this: should we option…
A) Continue up to Glacier and then come back thru Mount Rushmore on our way home.
Or
B) Go back thru Utah and hit Zion, Bryce, and then over to the Grand Canyon.

We want our teenage son to see Grand Canyon at some point before he leaves the nest so with option B this would be accomplished, however with Glacier we have heard of many wonderful mountain views etc. What are the best plusses and minuses for either...?

One consideration is heat at Grand Canyon in August???

Also I realize this is very subjective, but all input is much appreciated, we will be out about a month. We have been to Rocky Mountain National Park before so we will be there just a short time.

We will be doing a combination of Tents and hotels.

Thank you

Either option is a good one. I'd do Glacier since it's closer and save the southwest for another trip when it is cooler.

Strictly a personal choice. Do you like the desert or the mountains best? I'd pick the mountains but many would choose the desert.

I agree, as long as you are in the area, do Glacier. The SW would be saved for another trip. Both are great trips. I believe as long as you are there, to do as much as possible. You could find plenty to do for this vacation at the 3 parks. The SW would be a better trip sometime other than August!

My vote would be option A. I agree to save the SW for another cooler month. We did Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore two years ago. If you have any history buffs a side trip to Montana for Little Big Horn (Custard's last stand) is interesting. Also, you should visit Devils Tower (famous from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind") between Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore. We enjoyed our trip, hope your is good too!!

How much time do you have?
We took the Adventure Caravan's Great Circle Tour of the (desert) Western Parks which took the entire month of September. Take a look at their website for the itinerary for some ideas of how to do it.
It did not cover Glacier or Yellowstone which we are going to do on our own this coming August.

www.nps.gov

This will give you an arm chair tour of every National Park, some very well known, and some quite obscure. Check out each state you are visiting, and plan your trip acordingly.

As far as Grand canyon is concerned, it is very nice, of course, but somewhat over-rated and very, very crowded. I much prefer Dead Horse Point State Park and Canyonlands National Park, bth in Utah.

IMO if it was between the Grand Canyon and Glacier, I'd go with Glacier, more to see. I second about Little Bighorn if anyone is a history buff or is just interested in how Custer screwed up. To me Dead Horse point and Canyonlands was more interesting than the Grand Canyon, but that's just me.

Go for the mountains just spent 5 days at Yellowstone and 3 days near MT Rushmore not enough time. So much to see and do around both places, enjoy your trip.
