Looking for something different but casual and not extremely expensive. Any good (non-franchise) recommendations?

Thanks.

Try the "Phantom Canyon Brewing Co" located downtown in an old hotel building that was built around 1900. The food is great even if you dont want a brew.

The Phantom Canyon is great. I think the only non-casual (Shorts, sandals) place is The Famous which is a upscale steakhouse and it's business casual, maybe Pepper Tree also. Amanda's Fonda is great Mexican (not Tex-Mex). There is also Marigolds, Jun's, Lemon Grass, The Pepper Tree, and Steaksmith. They are all personal favorites. Here is a handy link and you can make your own choices.

Hey chili, is RED TOP still on Neveda Ave? Man, that place had great burgers back in the 70's

Yep. If you mean Conway's Red Top, home of the biggest burger in the city. They are being impacted by food inflation and higher costs, but I think they are still hanging in there. Here's a link so you can see what you're missing.

Thanks for your suggestions and links. Phantom's sounds like a great place.

chile7,

Have you tried Edelweiss at all?

Conway's is still going strong with two locations that I know of, and possibly a third on just off Academy around Carefree. One is on south Nevada and the other is on Circle just south of Platte.

Another place to eat just for the "ambiance" is Fargo's Pizza on East Platte.

Then there is Charlie's Pit BBQ in Manitou Springs.

Red Top isn't a gourmet experience, but we seem to go there every other time we head through the Springs. Love to support a local business that's been around so long.

No, I personally have not eaten there but it does have a great reputation.
It was also voted Best German restaurant in COS this year by both the local food critics and the public. There are dissenting voices though and many people seem to prefer Uwe's, which has also been voted Best German.

I've eaten there and their food is pretty good. My former boss everytime he'd come into town insisted on dining there. I don't know if Uwe is better than Edelweiss or not. I have ate at both.
