This happened last weekend on way home from camping trip , I was hearing a weird wind noise that turned out to be bicycles be dragged down the road from bike hitch dropping to road. Both bicycles need new front rims tires etc looks like only damage to them.

New in 1994 Frame mounted receiver rated for 5000 lbs rusted out the bar between the frame mounts .. Michigan salt yes it eats metal.

Any body else have this happen?

My older 1976 was pretty rusted out, end up replacing the bumper and put some Light weight I beams to strengthen the supports. That was about 3 years ago. Got ride of the C when I got the A. Good Luck and happy trails Bill

Come On....Give the guy a break!

Who is inspecting to see if their 5000 pound hitch will hold a couple bicycles?

We all know how rust can be, and his warning is well taken. The severity isn't neccessarily visual either. What may look like moderate surface rust, could be much worse.

It was great information....a warning to the rest of us who use their hitch for "ANY" use. Thanks for the "Head's Up".

It's fortunate that it was only bicycles that got damaged. If there had been a trailer on there... we might be having a much different conversation!

Sorry about the bikes, that really sucks. Hope you get them fixed and get a new bumper and hitch too!

WOW, I have never checked my hitch before. think I will jump on it from now on before starting off. And somebody thinking that everyone crawls under their RV before starting out to check out hitch is just dreaming.

I have to ask the AGE of the hitch/receiver.

Salt eats metal, BUT, it takes time.

That's what is so great about this forum- things we take for granted can sometimes cause problems and this forum brings them to light.

Thanks Michigander for bringing this to our attention.

I have to agree with Ron on this one. I'm pretty careful in checking my rig over regularly including tire pressures, hitch welds and a visual underbody check. (yes I actually crawl under there regularly to check my shocks, springs, any pan leaks etc.)

However even after doing this, at one campsite I noticed one of the support arms that straddle the two frame I-beams was hanging done on one side due to the welds being broken. I doubt I could have caught this in a preventative visual check ... in fact I didn't did I ... stuff happens!
