We just got a kitten(first cat ever). I see that people do take their cats camping. Our dog (Lab) always goes with us. If the cat were older and use to its surroundings I would probably leave at home and have a neighbor check on him but not really comfortable with it being so young.(8 weeks) We are going for 4 nights next week. Pretty local though. The other trips we have planned are within 2 hours from home. I am not so concerned about the traveling as I am about dealing with the kitten in the camper. If we go to the beach should we let him just roam the camper or put in bathroom or a crate? Any help will be appreciated.
thanks

You can let him roam, but if he still has his little claws you might not want him unattended. When we have ours cats in the carriers they just tend to sleep.
BTW...the best thing for a little kitty is ANOTHER LITTLE KITTY! We've never had any problems with siblings or cats of the same age since they were small. They will usually groom each other for life and get into a little less trouble.
Good luck

I would suggest starting the kitten out in a crate when you are not there. They love small places and there are so many in an RV to hide in!! (kittens are like mice that way - you can't imagine how small a space they can fit themselves into!!) A crate will keep it safe and, as it grows, it will consider that his private place and go there voluntarily. It also makes it easy for you when you must transport it to the vet, etc., if it will stay in the crate willingly. You can't imagine the fight a cat can put out if it doesn't want to go in a crate when it is not accustomed to it!! I would also suggest you get another kitten the same age - they keep each other company, play together and keep each other out of trouble!! And please have it neutered/spayed as soon as it is old enough.

Couple of things to be cautious of when traveling with a kitten or cat: 1) get your kitten used to traveling in a carrier - short little trips with a comfy blanket and toy to make him/her comfortable, 2)make sure you have him/her confined before you run your slides in and out as cats love to get down into things and there have been some sad stories of cats killed by the slide mechanisms, 3) make sure that there your rv has no gaps or oversized holes for systems that your cat could get down into. Ours ended up going behind our couch to find an oversized outlet that ran into the fridge cabinet. Boy, was it a pain getting him out.
We also travel with a squirt gun of water and put it outside on a table by the door so that if the cat looks like he wants to dart out, we squirt him with the water to discourage him. Very rarely is discouragement needed anymore and we don't have to fear him escaping.
When traveling ours are crated in our TV and when camping, they have free rein in the RV. We love taking our cats with us and would not have it any other way.

The other posters have provided good advice so I will extend my congratulations on your kitty! Enjoy your adventures, one of these days we'll take a cat or two with us when we start traveling for more extended periods of time.

yes definitely on the neutering. We gave careful thought into all the expenses and what had to be done before we agreed on getting one.
first vet visit tomorrow, 2nd in a few more weeks and they said neutering at 6 months. thanks for the info

Six months is a little late for neutering a male cat, I've had them start marking by then, and if they start that before they're snipped, its not a good thing. I'd be looking at four or five months.
Ditto for a female... you do NOT want to go through a heat with a kitten, trust me. I was too late one time and it got so bad I'd have to crate her and put her in the garage so I could get some sleep. Then she wouldn't come out of heat (some won't if they don't breed) so I had to pay extra and there was extra risk to her to get her spayed. Vet said her uterus was the size of a German Shepherd's, and this was a little cat. Believe me, it was a lesson I'll never forget!

I'm not familiar with all the rules on this forum, but I am pretty sure that if you use the word kitten in a thread, you must immediately post a picture of said kitten.
I'm just trying to help out here. I would hate for this thread to be closed because it didn't follow the rules.

I have a kitten that is now 6 months old. I take him in the motor home in the yard to get him used to it before we dicide to take him with us. Kittens will learn anything with lots of love. Good luck and enjoy you new baby they really are a blast. My baby is getting neutered next week as no animals live in my house if they arent spayed or neutered. Cats are wonderful pets and more than one is a real pleasure to watch as they learn from each other but each have their own distinct personalities. A picture is a must. Enjoy and please make sure your baby is safe when travelling. We are teaching ours to walk with a harness on its the only was he goes outside.
