I use my rig when I work, traveling to different locations. My arrangement for the past five years has been mileage-based on what the IRS allows, and a Per Diem for use of, wear and tear, etc. of $30.00 a day, plus all expenses. While this still keeps me under the cost of flying to a job, renting a car, getting a hotel, I wonder if it is a realistic dollar amount. Do any of you have experience along this line? Even with the horrid increase in diesel, I would like to make sure that the cost of using my rig stays approximately even with the "other way", flying-hotel-etc. Thanks for your experience. I usually get .43 per mile travel. PerDiem just went from $54 to $65 per day.

I usually take the trailer and it is usually a week to two week job. With the fuel prices now, it is going to be cheaper to leave the trailer home and stay in a hotel. Will have to be a really long job for me to break even with the trailer anymore.

The thing is, I don't get it till a couple weeks after the job is over. Last year I spent 3months on the same job. The $6000 check was nice right before Christmas though.

actualy, I just did a four day job in Cincinnati. I drove to El Paso airport from Ruidoso, NM-where I left my rig- flew to Cincinnati, rented a car, got a room at the down town Hyatt Regency. Including travel time and food my expenses for Sunday through Friday were near $2600.00. I believe I could drive it and stay in RV for less....
I get $30 a day for use of RV
all other expenses-RV park,etc
Food is $35 a day
I will run a calculation on RV travel and expense. PG

Unless there were very real savings using a motel, I think I'd rather continue using the rig even at a modest loss. More than one reason comes to mind, my own "HOME" and my own bed, and I just prefer relaxing in the evening by the campfire, no sitting in a motel room wishing I was out camping somewhere!! JMHO...

I get $75.00 per day plus mileage when I use my TT and I don't think it's worth it.

I get $120 / day for the days I work but getting to the job sight, local, is my expense. I do claim mileage from one city to the next on taxes at allowable rates when I change job sites.

I am glad to see this thread as there are so many of us who work on the road.

Maybe we could get the moderators on this website to give us a topic of our own, call it
"ROAD WARRIORS"

I have been living and working on the road for the last two years
with my wife and son. This is by choice.I got tired of always being gone and living in hotels, even good hotels make you wonder who was there before you and who cleaned it. Yes,with our rig it is my bed every night and my home I come home to every night.
It never ceases to amaze me the number of us out here that live on the road.

Take Care Fellow "ROAD WARRIORS"
Dave
