Being the owner/manager of a Cup team, and also trying to be its #1 driver.....has anyone ever succeeded?
Meanwhile, all that Rowdy Busch has to do is focus all his driving talent and energy towards winning races.
The difference is starting to show already.

I wish Tony the best on buying half ownership of a race team. Alot of things that have been said is he looking out for his future / retirement from Nascar. Haas/CNC racing gets there engines & cars from Hendricks.
The last owner/driver combo to be succesful is the late Alan Kulwicki. He won the championship in 1992. Although when Alan won the title, Nascar wasn't like it is today.

I wonder if the success of the little turd Kyle has influenced his desire to leave. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Tony fan, but he does have an ego and being second best on the team probably isn't setting too well with him.
I get the sense that he has been antsy for some time now. I suspect he doesn't really care who Kyle is, or what Kyle does. I sure hope this works out for him though because leaving a well established team can be pretty chancy in that sport, and especially in these economic times. Sounds like he may have a good business head on his shoulders so hopefully he scoped this thing out in detail before making the decision.

How smart can he be? It has been reported GM is a big supporter and they may be out of busniss before Tony starts his team. I bet, in less than a year, he will be begging Toyota to sponsor him.

Tony has a press conference scheduled this afternoon. I don't think he was happy driving a Toyota. I work for a subsidiary of GM and they are NOT going bankrupt. Reporting gloom and doom is the media's job....

GM's financial problems "is not a media job". Hundred's of anaylis have reported, BASED ON GM'S OWN NUMBERS, and based on what they are "currently" losing each month, if they do not show improvements in sales in the next nine months, they will be out of cash. These reports are made by people trained to and make their living reading financial reoprts. For the record, NO ONE believes there will be a turn around in GM sales in the next 9 months as they do not have products the public now wants and it takes years to introduce new cars. They cannot cut enough dollars without sales improvement to save them.
Hope your resume is current.

There were rumors that Tony wasn't happy with the idea of Gibbs going to Toyota last year. My guess is that Tony tried it, and didn't like it.
Although it must have been a sour relationship because Toyota owns Nascar, and the three domestic makes are just traffic. You would think he would stick with Toyota atleast through the 2008 season just because of the greater potential for wins.
But I cant blame him for wanting to go with Chevrolet. I would take that route too.

I guess we shouldn't pay any attention to the fact that GM outsells all other car makers with cars that nobody wants to buy.

Tony will now goin a long line of stars, DW, Ricky Rudd to name two, that left successful organizations to start their own company. All failed and the last years of their racing career they raced in the mid to the back of the pack. Big mistake for Tony.

Don't blame Tony for moving on. What I question is where he is buying into and who he is buying in with. I just hope his advisor team has it's ducks in a row. Teaming with Gene Haas who is in the iron wigwam for tax evasion while running a multi-million dollar company doesn't bode well. Also Tony worked with Larry Curry on the IRL side and he also did time in the iron wigwam. One thing that just drivers don't know, is how much of the sponsorship money is actually going into the car and that particular team, and what is filtering over in the other teams shop because they are on a different sponsorship plateau. He has had some lousy luck this year, but sure doesn't look like he is getting the "good" stuff. It will be interesting since what I saw, JGR team members are some how locked into the Gibbs regime. Another thing, Tony may see the time coming when Joe's boys totally take over, and may not like the outlook there. See that alot when a business is turned over to the kids. Should be able to run the business, what with education from Stanford and The College of William and Mary, but they could always sell out, take the money and run. I believe in the not too far future, teams will become franchises of FRANCECAR. This would give him an upfront chance to do that.

Liriope, I'll stand by my assessment of GM's future financial outlook. I've been a corporate accountant for 25 years for 3 different Fortune 500 companies: GM, GE, & Travelers so I think I am more than qualified to report on GM's liquidity....We just finished some new debt restructuring agreements before the end of the 2nd quarter. GM will probably discontinue some less profitable product lines, but that's it.
