We just got our new (to us) class A and we are headed out on our annual Colorado summer trip. It will be a big change from the Toyota Dolphin.
We have a week booked at the Highlander in Lake City but now that we have our new rig (32 ft, no toad) with a gen and A/C we are open to exploring more of Southern Colorado. We are coming from Southern Cal.
I did some searching here and looked at RV Park Reviews but would appreciate some further insight please.
Durango - I was going to book the Durango KOA (formerly the Durango East I believe) but saw a few more choices there. Any advice?
Mesa Verde? We are considering going to Mesa Verde but we don't have a tow so we would be driving the rig. Are we crazy? Is it blazing hot there now?
Grand Canyon - Familiar with Trailer Village and there is an opening - can we make it there in one day from Lake City or is that stupid?
Any other gems in that area should consider? We would really appreciate any advice for that general area. Thanks a lot! C.J.
We have never stayed at KOA we do like Alpen Rose or United in Durango the train goes right through the campground at United for great pictures. There is a steep grade and switch backs going to the top at Mesa Verde although it can be done. Driving to the Grand Canyon from Durango is 314 miles so can be done in a long day 6 hours. If it were me I would stop in Monument Valley at Gouldings RV park 23 miles north of Kayenta off of 160 this is about half way and you would have time to see some of Monument Valley. Just a suggestion. Have fun
1. If you're going to do Mesa Verde, I'd stay in the park. They do have a few sites with FHU, and being on top of the Mesa will be quite a bit cooler than down on the flats. Besides, you'd have to drive up the mesa every day rather than just staying up there.
2. The drive from Lake City to Grand Canyon would be too much for one day IMHO. (Amazingly, Google Maps take you over Engineer Pass!)
For immediate responses you can search this Forum for any of the locations you are interested in. There will probably be several hundred responses already instead of waiting for the few you will get in this post.
You can also search the results of the first search. For example, search on `Durango' then search the results for `campground' or `railroad', etc.

Stayed at Alpen Rose last month and would do so again. Be sure to take the Durango-Silverton Rail Road trip. It's not to be missed. I strongly agree about a stop and tour of Monument Valley (stay at Gouldings) on your way to the Grand Canyon. Try for at least a day at Mesa Verde too if you haven't been there.
We just returned from Durango last month and thoroughly enjoyed it. We stayed at the Durango Riverside resort and liked it very much. Right on the Anemas river. Alpen Rose looked like a very nice campground also. The Durango Riveside Resort was formerly the KOA North and recently purchased and remodeled. Mesa Verde is a must see. You get a new respect for the culture there and the remnants left behind. If possible take the drive to Silverton and Ouray. It was unbelievable. The waterfalls and scenery is something not to be missed. Mike.

I'd suggest the following if you have the time:
N. Rim of Grand Canyon (less crowds, cooler)
Antelope Canyon @ Page, AZ (slot canyon hike)
Monument Valley (stay @ Gouldings CG)
Canyon DeChelley National Monument (overlooked, but very scenic and interesting)
Best time of year is May or October but very worthwhile no matter when.
