Which route to take from Joliet, IL to Sioux Falls, SD across I80 and up to Sioux Falls or up thru WI and across MN to Sioux Falls, SD.
What sites do you recommend along the way, any major road construction to avoid, etc.
Ultimate destination is Rapid City, SD. (Class A, toad and DW)

Clearly, MN and WI have much better scenery. Iowa is flat, boring with fields of corn and the smell of hogs (obviously our rival). However, if you are taking interstate 90 across Southern Minnesota the drive from LaCrosse to Austin is extremely bumping.

I-90 is one of the most boring roads I haver ever driven...plus right now there is major construction on the stretch from Rochester to Dexter (which desperatley needs it). Iowa is nothing but corn fields and hogs, so I guess either route is not going to be the best.

I-80 through Iowa is a smooth road, downside is alot of truck traffic. I drive this road alot and don't smell hog farms as previously noted. Scenery is beautiful rolling hills in the west and flat in the east. Really nice drive if you ask me.

Now that you mention it, I have NEVER smelled a hog farm from the interstate. back roads, certainly.

If you're looking for scenery, go north to Minneapolis and take I-94. It's much more scenic than I-90! One of the rest stops is the Visitor's Center for Teddy Roosevelt National Park, and it's well worth the stop. Of course you'll have to head south at some point to get down to Sioux Falls.

Without knowing the present state of construction on any of the roads, I'd suggest taking I-80 to Des Moines and then I-35 up to I-90. That would allow you to see some of the prettiest parts of Iowa, including the Amana Colonies, and still getting into western Minnesota. In my opinion the biggest advantage of I-90 over I-80 is less traffic. Either route is a pretty drive if you let it be. Western Iowa has more rolling hills than western Minnesota, so it may be a little more scenic, but I think they're both pleasant drives.
