One mean grade coming out of Needles, but other than that there is smooth sailing, just a lot of heat and very small grades.

Depending on what your driving or pulling "mean" can be a kind way to put it.

If you are asking about the grade coming west out of Needles on I-40 the only thing that is mean about it the HEAT! I would bet you have been up steeper grades.
We always try to drive it in the mornings or after the sun is down during the summer.

There are some climbs in the Tehachapis just before you drop down into Bakersfield but not as bad as the other direction.

The portions in the desert are about what you expect with the heat, but you take the Bakersfield turn-off in Barstow and end up going through Tehachapi, it's a pretty drive, and you go past the airplane boneyard...but you might want to fill in Barstow first, I don't know how the fueling stations are laid out on that route.
