1) What are the premium Top-Shelf and desired new Off-Road ATVs?

2) In the market for one that will have the best re-sale value too.

3) I'm wondering if any come in diesel-engined models?

Your helpful advice is appreciated.

You do not want anything that runs diesel unless you are a farmer.

Have you ever ridden one before?

What type of riding will you mosly be doing? (sand, dirt, trails, technical, rocky, muddy, etc.

BigJon,

No, not since 1971, a Honda 90 ATV 3-wheeler. I was employed @ a Honda dealership in Bellevue, NE., and could ride any bike they had.

Dirt/dry, trails wide-open spaces in West Texas/New Mexico/East Arizona.

Also using to ride to grocery store 6- blocks away in neighborhood.

Not a work ATV.....transportation and nature exploring in the boonies. Not mountains. No mudding.

Sport quads are fun but can wear you out especially if you ride on rugged terrain or with younger people that ride fast and hard.

4x4 quads are more comfortable and allow you to ride rocky or muddy terrain.

Quads have come a long ways in technology over the past 10 years.

You really can't go wrong with a purchase from the main vendors, yamaha, honda, can-am, polaris.

There are alot of used ones out there for a couple of grand.

If its legal to ride in on the streets that would be great, I wish I could.

I think most any of the major brands would suit you very well, Polaris, Honda, Yamaha would be top on my list. Can-Am, Zuki and others would be second on my list. Much of it is really personal preference. Honda no doubt has a good reputation, though I think when it comes to the Utility market they are coming up short on features. For the best ride, I'd go Polaris, but I am biased. I like my Cadillac ride. You won't need a big bore engine, so something in the 500 range with EFI would probably suit you very well.

My opinion, Can-Am are some of the fastest and somewhat light, great motor. Polaris has the most comfortable ride, plenty of power, very heavy(which explains the comfortable ride)and great AWD system. Kawasaki's new 750 is supposed to be a great new quad, fast and light. These are my favorites, though Yamaha,Suzuki and Arctic Cat all make great machines. Best thing is to ride each and see what feels good for you.

Here's the type of ATV I think I want.
Price of gruffly asking $4K seems high to me @ 10 years old.
What do these things run new? Or is he that high because it's "mint?"

I guess I need to start visiting new dealers to get the feel of these.
Thanks.

His ad:
1998 Honda Foreman 400 4x4 / 1,187 miles / Asking $4,000.00 obo.

AD DESCRIPTION:
"I am selling a 1998 Honda Foreman 4x4 400 green for my garndfather. He is getting older and doesnt need this bike anymore. The bike is in MINT and that isnt a word I use loosely. This bike is probably gonna be the cleanest bike you will find. Asking price is 4000.00 obo and obo doesn't mean 3000.00 if you are looking for a barain keep looking. If you want a very well maintained and meticulously cared for bike then this is what you are after."

Garbers Honda/ Kawasaki in Fairbury Nebraska is advertising new Honda Rancher 420 cc with partime 4x4 for $4400.00. I think that used one is too much. The older fulltime 4 wheel drive models really tire you out. I have a Kawasaki Brute Force 750 & love it. It has the cvt trans so I don't have to shift. I bought it new in 05 & haven't had any problems with it. It was about $7,000.00 new
