We just purchased a 2008 Can-Am Outlander Max XT 650. It is a great quad and has a very powerful V-Twin. It is also designed for two up riding for me and the wife. I usually ride my KDX, but sometimes it cool sight seeing on the 4x4. The XT package came with tire/rim package and winch as well as a few other extras.

My brother in law became blind a few years ago. One of our ATVs is legit for carrying a passenger, so we can tak him for a ride on fire roads. He had a blast. Ours is a Polaris.
Last weekend the forest ranger was patrolling the private campground where we were staying. He was writeing tickets for no helmet and any ATV not factory designed for two riders that had two riders. Many of the dads with their kid sitting on the ATV seat with them got tickets.

Polaris has the most comfortable ride, plenty of power, very heavy(which explains the comfortable ride)and great AWD system. Kawasaki's new 750 is supposed to be a great new quad, fast and light. These are my favorites, though Yamaha,Suzuki and Arctic Cat all make great machines. Best thing is to ride each and see what feels good for you.
Absoluty ave to agree. I've had 10 atv and after many o Suzuki's I swithced to the Can Am. The Suzuki were bullet proof and great machines, but the can am's seem to get stuck less, has more power, more comfort and i really like the way the XT comes equipped. I've also had a polaris and to be honest, it sucked. It would break sitting in the garage. Then the factory wouldn't honor the warrenty. Always some excuse lke it's not covered if it's rained on, or yo start it, or you ride it. With the experiance i'd never own anything that said Polaris on the side. It was comfortable adn went thru mud quite well, but it spent 6 months of it's first year at the shop.
the yamaha grizzly 700 has power steering. for slow trail riding, its great! they also came out with a 550( i think ) this year that has power steering as well.
Joe, Take a good look at the Yamaha 700 efi with power steering. This is got all you need and will adjust to altitude with your travels. I ride with 2 guys and they love them. All atvs will loose retail value fast.
I have 05 600 polaris, 2700 miles on it, quite a few upgrades and I ride it on every occasion I can. Please figure what you would like to ride, how you will ride it, one or two of you, and where would want to travel to with it.
As others have stated, if you stay with the name brands you will probably do well. I have an Arctic Cat 650 TRV (sits 2 up) and I love it. Arctic Cat does offer a Diesel model, however, no one I ride with has one. Before you narrow down your search you may want to look at the Yamaha Grizzley 700 or the new 550. These models offer Power Steering as an option. As crazy as it sounds, after long days of riding my 2 friends that have the 700 with power steering are not near as sore as the rest of us. Something to think about anyway. The side-by-sides (Rhino's Prowlers and such) are wonderful, however, in Missouri they are not allowed in many states parks that allow ATV'S or in the National Forest area's in Southern Missouri. We use the Rhino in our private campground which allows most anything that passes inspection. The Rhino is near unstopable. Good luck in your search...
This is just me, but I don't think you really need a big 4X4 for what you would be doing. And as for resell I'd find a used one that some one bought and didn't ride much, and let them take the big depreciation hit.

Lord, grant me the senility to not recognize the people I don't like, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference

The wear factor is something to consider. I'd like to have the power steering!
