Our rig is gas, are there any issues to be concerned about?
Yes, the price. It's so expensive you will want to bring lots of cash.......$2.45/US Gal last I heard. LOL No, there is plenty of Pemex stations and most are easy to get into and out of. Just keep an eye on the pump when the attendant start to pump to make sure it was reset to zero. Lots of things to see and do so just go and enjoy the people and their hospitality, which is awesome.

JUST do it! All the info you need is on the Internet and in Church's book. Do the Mainland first, more choices in everything from roads, where to stay, climate, food and much more. You can always follow someone down if you are a little uncomfortable and part ways later after you get your feet on the ground. First thing to realize is you will not cover as many miles in a day as in USA or Canada. Good luck, we will be crossing Thanksgiving.
If going to mexico means going to Baja to you, crossing into Mexico will be easier. Going to the Mainland means temporarily importing your vehicle(s) and the Church's book will come in handy.

Yes and No. Most of Sonora is also a tourist free zone also, without importing your vehicle, so Kino Bay and Guaymas are also open to free travel. Importing your vehicle is no big deal, just a little paperwork and $27 dollars, then you're not restricted as to where you can travel.
