I use a set of rope lights on a timer, but don't worry about them being on even in close settings... they are under the awning flap and the light pattern is basically only under my awning, are not bright enough to bother anyone else...

on my seasonal I have this light on a timer for three hours...

and this one is on all night... it is 24' in the air can cast light on my entire lot but not a bright light, it is high enough to not shine in eyes and attract the bugs away from where we are sitting...

it will light neighboring sites, but they complain if it burns out as it is just enough light to move around at night without tripping on something...

Our lights are bright, so we usually turn them off when we're around the fire. We never leave them on all night!

I never understood why people leave their lights on. I like the dark to see the stars better.

Light pollution

if I had only known I was such a flagrant violator...

I sit by the fire late into the night very often and can see the stars very well even with my lighting on... if a bulb burns out the neighbors complain if I don't fix it and it lights my flag that I fly at night...

I practically never use AC, only turn the WH on ten minuets before using it and off as soon as finished, and use very little water other than in the black tank where I use no harmful chemicals...

the lowest mileage vehicle I own has 140,000 I buy them new and take care of them and use them until they are worn out... I don't abuse them and average 100,000 on a set of tires because I don't over use brakes or the accelerator...

but according to your link I am a lighting polluter...
with my two 15 watt florescent lights... now that's funny...

the trouble with these organizations and their web sites is, while meaning well discount the use of commonsense when they establish rules like never ever use dusk to dawn lighting because it is wasteful...

if I had a single complaint from a neighbor, I would reassess my lighting needs... but if the complaint come from three blocks away or California I just laugh...

needs adapt and change from seasonal, to week long, to overnight, to WM camping... there is no set rules that apply to all, it is we that need to adjust to the environment we are in... what may be pollution in one case is not true in every situation, and that includes the second hand smoke they referred to...

we have a brain, the key is to use it, open it so as to be able to learn from others, and leave the blinders on the horse when considering what is best, each and every day...

We camp mostly near a river or the Bay therefore we never know when a storm or strong winds will kick up in the middle of the night and DH will have to get up and roll up the awning. So we don't even bother with awning lights.

Depends. Can I run my LOUD contractors generator all night long while it's sitting under your bedroom window?

Not even the same thing...quiet hours do not allow this. Quiet hours are a campground rule. Thank goodness there isn't a campground rule against leaving lights on. I tend to leave mine on sometimes, but a stay up very late and play cards under the awning at night, if it bothers ya, well thats what shades are for. Or like someone else said...close your eyes.

When we set up patio lights, always turn them off when we go in for the night.
We like it DARK at night!
