Also would like to know if any campgrounds has any shuttles to places, we usually don't take a tow. We would like to hike the AT Trail and kayak. thanks for the information. that is the problem i don't know where in maine, we are coming from NJ, i am just trying to get some ideas for places to see, we would like to stay like near state parks. thanks for the help.
For the AT, you would be in western Maine, or near Baxter State Park. Your vehicle is too large for the park itself, and there are not shuttle buses that I am aware of. You might look at campgrounds near the following towns or areas: Millinocket, Bethel, Grafton Notch, Rangeley Lakes, Moosehead Lake.
If you would like to explore Acadia National Park, there are some shuttle opportunities there, but it is not the AT. You can climb Cadillac Mountain or many others. There are some great hiking opportunities within the park there, as well as biking and horse-back riding. Some campgrounds to consider are: Hadley's Point, Blackwoods (in the park, no hookups), and the Bar Harbor KOA (pricey).
Another coastal state park is Camden Hills State Park. There is a great little climb up Mount Battie that gives you a view of the ocean, a thriving downtown area with shops, a pretty harbor, and lots to do in the area. This site will give you information about all the Maine State Parks. Maine State Parks The next link is for commercial campgrounds. maine campgrounds
Depending on what part of August you are here, you may be able to catch the American Folk Festival in Bangor. American Folk Festival
I think your best bet is Acadia State Park. You will find everything you want at this state park ( Hiking, Kayaking, and sightseeing in Bar Harbor)). Check it over on the internet and you will see it's one of the most visited park in the United States.
There are many campgrounds to consider. Beside the ones tjholyoke mentionned, there's Mount Desert Narrow (full hookup)on Mt Desert Island, Seawall (no Hookup)and Smuggler's Den (full hookup)both in Southwest Harbor which is 1o minutes away.
There are shuttle buses (Island Explorer)all over Acadia State Park which is very convenient. They even go to campgrounds to pick up guests and it's free. Check their site:

One thing.... no matter where you stay........reserve fast. Acadia is very popular.
Enjoy
The ocean side and the mountain side of Maine are 2 different animals. You can hike parts of the AT (pick up the guide book), hope your towing a car as you won't fit many MH's at the trail heads. There are many nice areas in western maine you can kayak. If you wanted to hike the AT in baxter, you could stay in outside Millnocket at the CG at the foot of Chesuncook Lake. They used to book drop offs where they will bring you up the lake and you can paddle back. It's a big lake a good 11 miles long (not exactly short kayak waters), views of Kathadin, moose if your lucky, and quiet other then the occational float planes and fishing boats.
You really need to narrow it down some, there is great kayaking all over the state as well as good hiking. If you were to pick a travel iinerary you can then find all the hikes and waterways you want. I take it you're talking smaller rec type kayaks, and day trip hikes.

thanks for all the information, i have been looking it all up on google, i think we have it narrow down to Acadia NP, it looks and sounds so nice. I was thinking about staying Smugglers Den campground. i have to check it out.
