Hi,
I have a 2005 Ram 1500 quad 4x4 w/5.7 hemi. We are looking at getting a 2008 Jayco Jayfeather 29x. Is my truck going to be able to tow this or should I consider something smaller or lighter ?
The dealership said I should be fine, but that's why I wanted to get an honest opinion from the experts on this forum instead of someone just trying to make a sale.
If I did my homework correctly, I think I should be ok.
PLEASE CONFIRM. I don't want to make a fatal mistake. Also what about WD or sway ?

Thanks

What is your rear axle gear ratio? We tow a 30 foot trailer with our 1500, however, we have the Mega Cab which sits on the 2500 frame. We also have the full tow package and the rear axle ratio is 4.10. We have a weight distribution hitch and a sway bar.

I have the 2004 version of your same truck... I tow a 29.5' Rockwood that weighs in at 6,000+/- when loaded. I upgraded from WD single friction anti-sway to a Reese Dual-Cam WD system, and I also upgraded my brake controller from a Voyager to a Prodigy. The old HTT was a 23' Jayco HTT at about 5,000 lbs, and with the hitch and brake upgrades, the bigger TT tows better! I don't know if I'd want to run it up and down the Rockies, but it does fine for what I want/need.

Our set is almost the same..2003 Quad Cab 5.7 Hemi 3.93 rear. Tows our Jayco 27 BH loaded plus alot of toys just fine. I too was concerned about the weight of the TT when we made our decision to purchase the 27BH & now wish we bought the larger 29BHS..Your truck should tow that TT or even somewhat larger TT just fine....with the 3.93 rear. I did add a set of Super Springs to our truck to help with the extra load of junk we bring along.

Good Luck and Enjoy

Bottom line is make sure you do your homework.

I would take some time and go to a Dodge dealership and try and find a Ram Truck Specification Guide, which should have your truck listed in it.

The last thing you need is to be broken down on a mountain pass with a overheated engine, because the people on the forum said it would be OK.

It is a good starting place to see what other people are towing with similar truck, but make sure your comparing apples to apples.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Personally, I'd stay under 26' with a 1/2 ton truck, even a Hemi. More to towing than power.

I tow a 28' car hauler that weighs 7500 lbs, and carry an 8' truck camper that weighs 1800 lbs, Dodge Ram 2500 with Hemi, 5 speed manual and 3.73 gears. I think it does just fine, power gets me up any interstate grade on I77 at 55 mph in third gear. The 2500 chassis is a fair bit more capable and uncomfortable than the nicer riding 1500 chassis.

It's a 1/2 ton truck with 30' of trailer, do the right thing a look a little smaller.

It sounds like you have checked out the specs and done your homework. Your Ram should have no troubles pulling the 29X. Good luck!

We tow a 27 footer overall from hitch to rear bumper with the same truck. 20" wheels 392 gears. We weigh in at 6400 lbs. No problems at all.
