OK, since we are fulltimers, we are no longer in one place. My husband needs to have his PSA test (prostrate). So far, every doctor or clinic I call he is considered a new patient and between the office visit and all this other testing they require for new patients, the cost is going to be 250.00 or more.
Does anyone know if hospitals do this or have any other ideas??? Our insurance is a very high deductable and basically it doesn't apply.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Wait to have it done until you are near your former doctors where he will not be a 'new patient'? Presume there is some doctor somewhere who wants this test done with the results sent to him - call and ask him for some help in getting the test run remotely?

The original doctor is retired and my husband hasn't been there for 3 years and is also considered a new patient. There fee is the most costly, over 400.00

Here in my area you can go to the lab and have the blood pulled and they will run the test for you.

OK, what I would do is call up the insurance company, find out the cheapest state for doing the test, and found out the best doctor there. The test "should" (Haha dealing with insurance companies!) be covered under your medical plan.

Was his previous Dr's practice sold to another practice? If so, could they help?

In March a local clinic in Phoenix had a walk in PSA screen for $10.00. I didn't need one, but it was advertised on the radio for over a week.
Is there some sort of public health out reach available in the area???

A PSA count is a very routine blood test. Any walk-in clinic or urgent care facility should be able to order the screening. Yes of course you'll have to pay for an office visit and any deductible you might have. Nobody does them for free unless they offer a special like Gruffy mentioned above. Any walkin clinic should be able to help you if all you want is a PSA level screening.

Is there some sort of public health out reach available in the area??? Call the clinics and hospitals in the areas you visit. In my area many have what they call health fairs with reduced rate blood tests including the PSA. The thing I found most important with the PSA is not the value of the number but how much it changes in a year. If your number doubles in a year best see a doctor and get a biopsy. My number was only 5.0 and most doctors will tell you not to worry. I had the biopsy and had a gleason score of 6 and had radiation treatments for the cancer. Looks like we got it all but had I listened to my primary care doctor the cancer would still be advancing.

My wife watches the paper. Many small hospitals have free tests for prostate once or twice a year in Indiana. Something about serving the community they must be required to do. My primary doc always says go there instead of to her. I would also check with the american cancer society for this info as they always give out there pamphlets at the same time. My brother in law just sent me a note telling me to eat Broccoli as it helps prevent prostate cancer. I told him I hated it and would not do it. I would run the risk. I am not sure I can trust him on this one. Good luck.
