The house sale will be official in August and our fulltiming will be official. We've gotten our address from MyDakotaAdress and are in the process of researching insurance rates for the turnover in August (thanks for all your help here.)
We're planning on driving through SD on our way from MA to UT with our rental truck and want to stop in SD to get our driver's licenses. We've tried navigating around the website to locate offices and are confused by the various offices and hours of operation. We're used to a very different system in MA where they're all Registry offices and have pretty much the same hours.
We called and were directed toward some offices that are in the southern part of the state, but after re-looking at the website, it appears that we were given offices for license testing, which we don't need -- just a transfer of state to state (which we understand involves no more than an eye exam.)
So, for those of you who know the state we need some help.
Are these satellite-type offices places where we can get our licenses transferred from MA to SD or are they just for testing? Our confusion lies in the types of facilities -- everywhere from a police station to a community center.
We'll be traveling across I-80 and would like to find the closest office to that route. The restricted days and hours are of concern.
Thanks!

You can still to go to an office that does testing although you only have to take an eye exam.
Note that you will have to have two forms of ID. I used my NH drivers license and as I recall an insurance card that had my social security number on it.
You might want to call and see what is required now since the new Homeland Security regulations are in effect.
You will find that SD is nothing like MA. Much less hassle and much cheaper. As I recall our licenses were $8 for five years.
They don't have all the rules and regulations that you are used to either.
There seems to be a lot more common sense in play also.

Thanks -- anywhere has to be easier than MA. Our son-in-law, who grew up in WY, was astounded at all that he and our daughter had to go through when they lived with us in MA for a bit. When they left, he couldn't get over having to turn his plates in. We just sold one of our cars to folks from IL. They, too, couldn't understand that we had to turn our plates in in order to cancel our registration and insurance.
We're still trying to track down what offices might be the best as we drive across I-80. So, these satellite offices -- wherever they may be -- are set up to provide our licenses on the spot?

Probably just zip up to Sioux Falls and do it there.

Thanks -- we were just trying to find the closest office that could issue our driver's licenses to I-80. We'll be driving a moving truck and have some time constraints in getting it to Utah. Although MA drives us crazy with all its regulations, the offices have hours every day and so SD's area offices have become a bit confusing for us.

Since I80 is so far from Sioux Falls, I could only find one place off I29 from Sioux City, Iowa to Elk Point, South Dakota. I29 business route(main Street)in downtown elk point (209 East Main st)You can google North Sioux City drivers license and just below the map it shows the closest as elk point. I believe I80 starts southwesterly in sioux city Iowa at the I29 intersection. Goodluck

Instead of using taxpayer money to build an entire new building to serve a limited number of people, SD will use existing space in any state building or maybe local county building.
An example of common sense?

Thanks, everyone! And to the person who pointed out the common sense approach to using available space -- we're just not used to that! What a novel idea! Imagine!!! -- saving the taxpayer some money...

We went to Deadwood, they were open Tues and Thurs or something like that. Worked our getting a new license into a sightseeing trip around the Deadwood area. It was one of the most fun trips we have ever had and got our liscenses at a small fire station, two guys came in and set up their equipment and we were the only ones there at the time. Was the first time we had fun at the DMV!
