We just this week went from Des Moines to Vermilion SD to get my DR lic renewed. Not a problem. Do a Google search on SD drivers lic and it gives the counties and when they are open. OR call up MyDakotaAdress and ask them. That is what you are paying them for. This should be one of the easer things you have to worry about in getting to be fulltimers. If not you might want to rethink the whole fulltiming thing.

Thanks again, all. For the last poster (was_butnotnow), no need to rethink the fulltiming thing. :-) We've been planning this for over a year -- dreaming and researching much longer... Just soliciting the knowledge of those who have gotten licenses in SD before us. Each state is different. We can certainly check with MyDakotaAddress and would have if all those that are here weren't so eager to help with their knowledge and ideas! :-)
I love the suggestion from the poster who used Deadwood. We've been there and found it a lot of fun, too. Just wish we didn't have to get the rental truck back to Utah, but the payoff will be that we'll be heading to OR in Sept. One of the two states left that we've yet to visit. (Well, three, if we were to count HI.)
Thanks again.

Yes, see above message. Some of the smaller offices are only open 2 or 3 days a week. Don't worry about what you are driving if you go to Sioux Falls. We had to go there towing our 5'er and took up 3 parking meters right in front of the courthouse. When we came out after only 20 minutes, there was a motorhome & toad taking up 3 more spots. No problem. We really, really like being residents of SD.

Sorry for the flame... Since looking at your date of joining this forum. When from different parts of the country it is forums like this who can answer your questions about these things.
We are domicled in SD and are happy with that choice.
Have great travels...

We went to the Court House in Sioux Falls to get our DL's. Took all of less
than a half hour. No fuss, no muss.

You can get your driver's licenses at any DMV in the state. It is true that in smaller towns, the DMV may only be open one day a week. Just check the DMV in the town or towns that would be convenient for you along your route and see what their days of operation are.

While we got our original driver's licenses in Sioux Falls (where our mail forwarding service is), we've renewed both licenses in Sturgis at the Community Center on Lazelle Street. They are only open on Fridays, so we make sure that's when we're there. The Sturgis Community Center has a huge parking lot, so you can show up with the largest of RVs and have no problems finding a place to park (unless, of course, you're there during the motorcycle rally!).

It took us no more than 20 minutes at the Courthouse in Sioux Falls to get
our drivers license. Quick and easy--Not like Indiana!!
