Hi all--thinking it is about time to change out the DexCool in my '96 7.4 Vortec. Remember reading somewhere about DexCool not liking air or air exposure? Any advise or recommendations about changing the old coolant with a new batch of DexCool? Thanks in advance, as always for your input.

Don't use Dexcool for replacement. Use one of the "all makes, all models" gold/yellow coolants instead. Drain all of the Dexcool (block drains also) flush and refill with new stuff using distilled water for the mix. Change all hoses and thermostat while you're at it. If your coach has heater lines to the water heater or a rear heater change those too.

Also put in a tube of Aluma-Seal. You can get it at any parts store.

Looks like "Abandon Ship on the Dexcool!" but no one says why!

It eats EVERYTHING not just gaskets. Worst coolant ever made. Make sure you flush that stuff out good.

the best way would be to use demineralized water to flush through the engine till it was all gone... I have to use bottled water to fill my radiators as my well water will calcify in the engine...so I will drain the rad and reservoir, dump in a jug of bottled water till its full again, run the engine for a minute, and repeat this 2 more times... then I'll dump in a bottle of water wetter and fill with 2 bottles of concentrated 2 gallons of bottled water and the rest will be premix... as 2 gallon jugs of concentrated is all that was on the shelf at the parts store...

PS: yes the water wetter works... in our ATV's its the difference of being towed home when our rads are caked full of mud or riding for the rest of the day...I use 1 bottle in my engines and they never "heat up" when Im sitting in traffic...
