Planning a 3 month trip to California this winter. We like to book reservations as we go. Will this be possible? Or should we book far in advance?. Planning to cover from lower state to around Napa valley.
Thanks for your help.

If you want to stay in state CG's then yes, reservations are a must but if you go for private places then it's not neccesary as there are many to choose from.
The only exception to this would be the Anahiem area where reservations are almost always required because they're so busy.
Are you going to Disneyland???

It depends on where you go, some campgrounds along the beaches of So. Cal can be booked up as far in advance as they'll let you book during the peak times.
It is only when you forsake all fear that you can truly be free.

Campgrounds along the coast in S.Cal & N. Cal are usually booked solid for weekends and often have space available Sunday thru Thursday.

Joe: One thing to keep in mind is that the areas of the state N of LA get a lot of rain in the winter. Depending when you arrive here I would plan the N part of your trip first. Go to this site: www.rvparkreviews.com for info on RV Parks. Have a great trip

During the winter months I don't think you will need reservations anyplace in SoCal. Except maybe holidays, like spring break. Both private and public campgrounds have winter space.

If by "winter" you mean after the middle of November, then odds are you won't need reservations anywhere. We live, obviously, in So. Cal., and have taken a number of winter trips all over California (after mid November) and rarely, if ever, make reservations in advance...gives us greater flexibility each day.
What I do in advance of our trip is check out what RV parks are available in areas we are driving through, so when we decide to call it a day we then have an idea of where to head for the night.

I'd book the holiday weekends well in advance, especially on the Central Coast between Ventura and Monterey. You may find that many are already booked making it necessary to rethink your route. Be aware that there's severe tule fog in the San Joaquin Valley during the winter; it make traveling treacherous.

My wife and I try to avoid any kind of agenda when we RV travel. We toured central Cal years ago and had reservations only for the first night of ten. From there on we played it by ear and had little trouble finding good spots. We even got a campsite in Yosemite at the last minute (but that was really dumb luck). Still, we just want to stay longer if we like a place and always seem to change our minds as we move along. So far, we have always found a good spot; sometimes even a great spot that we had not known about in advance. Only once have we ended up in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Only along the beaches and only State campgrounds which fill up almost any weekend. I wouldn't miss Pismo Beach (clam chowder on the boardwalk), Santa Cruz, (Boardwalk and roller coaster), Pacifica, SF RV Park, $10 off coupon in RV Journal, (Bus stops at park to take you into SF and the piers) and Bodega Bay, (sunset walks on the beach) Welcome to the Golden State...
