We have a Westie (Scottie) who is twelve years old and hates to be tied up to trees and barks at every other dog that walks by. We just bought a Shih Tzu (Gracie) to play with him but he is not interested. We were going to explore getting one of those circular fences to keep them inside to see if this might help. Does anyone have other suggestions?

Thanks,

Ben

Duct tape works for everything else. Of course, Westies' have a short snout. Try not to tape the whiskers since they're very sensitive. Seriously, have you considered obedience training?

Some dogs just like to bark and certain breeds are worse than others. We used to have a Cairn Terrior who loved to bark and thought he was the toughest dog in the campground. You know, the little dog syndrome. We never did come up with a good way to get him to settle down and not bark so much, so we eventually just left him at home with a dog sitter, or boarded him in a kennel. We found that leaving him behind, as sad as it was, just worked out better for everyone involved....us and the dog. He has since passed due to old age and now we travel with two yellow labs who are great camping dogs and don't constantly bark and everyone and everything.

Don't leave them out by themselves tied up. Stay with them and just keep trying to control their barking....sometimes we use a water spray bottle. It seems to be helping.

We use the outside gate for our two Chihauhau Mixes - actually three of them hooked together.

Re barking - the little one is a barker (all 5 lbs of her).

We got a kid's water pistol. Used it just a couple of times. Now, just showing it her stops the barking immediately.

Worth a try?

Shock collar...WOOF! ZAAAP!!!

Kidding. I like the water gun solution. One of our dogs is a "barky von schnauzer". We do a lot of in/out with her. She's never happy where she is because she's spoiled rotten...

Get a muzzle. They work. Available at Petsmart. Its tough to bark loudly when you can't get your mouth open all the way. I hate barking dogs (we have 2 dogs).

The water bottle worked wonders for me in training our dogs not to bark at our old house. They used to sit in the front window and bark at everyone that walked by. It took them less than a week of training with the water bottle tp get the point. When I tell them "that's enough", they stop right away.

If your dog is more stubborn, you could add a drop or two of citronella oil to the water. They really hate that smell and even the most noisy dog will quiet after a few shots of the scented water. Just try to be careful not to hit the eyes.

I love dogs, or should I say well behaved dogs.
After we had to put our 15 year old lab down, we looked for a dog that was not a barker; just because we didn't want a problem when we were in a CG. I think if more people would use this as a prerequisite, instead of just getting a "cute" dog, there would be more happy campers.
I have used a water gun in the past to deter a yappy dog from barking.
It worked on my M-I-L's snoring, too.

Where have you been for the last 12 years? Seems to me that you failed somewhere along the way. The water guns work. Let just hope its not to late to teach an old dog obedience.
