Last week while driving home on the freeway in Western Montana at about 60 mph I had the tread on my right inner dual tire separate but the tire not blow out. The tires on the coach are Toyo 235/75 – R16 M54’s and are four years old with just over thirty-five thousand miles on them. I have rotated the tire every year, had the front end aligned, and always keep the tire inflated at 80 PSI. The coach has also been weighed and is close to GVWR but not overweight.

Has anyone else had this problem with a Toyo tire? The tread loss did take out my extra sewer hose carrier tube but caused no other damage.

Did you buy the tires 4yrs ago or are they 4yrs old? Also, how much weight are you running on them?

Possibility that it somehow became damaged or lost pressure and separated. Check the DOT #'s and see if the other came from the same lot. Might check the NHTSA to see if there was a recall for those tires. You can sign up for recall updates to be sent to your email.I have Toyos on both motorhomes 16's and 19.5's no problems so far. I will be interested to see what others say.

Dick if you have ever changed the direction of rotation of the tire that could be the cause I was told by one tire store (major truck tire dealer in town) when I told him I was going to rotate our 19.5 wheels ourselves. Rear outsides can only go back and forth with opposite front positions.

Some radials do not like changing directions even though they are not sold as unidirectional tires. He said some never cause an issue and others separate very quickly after the direction has been changed.

I had all six tires installed new four years ago. I am about 300 lbs under maximum load on each rear tire. All tires were checked for 80 lbs inflation just a few days prior to the failure. Also, there was very little change in the outside temperatures for several days and the average temperature was around 80 degrees so not really very hot.

Gale, I find that information very interesting. I am going to print a copy of your post and show it to the Lew Schwab folks when I go in tomorrow.

It's an old school way never to change the direction of rotation an radials. I scraped knuckles and busted wrenches in the automotive and medium truck field for almost 40 yrs. and to this day no one will convince me to change the direction of rotation on any radial tire.

Dick - 4 YO purchase doesn't necessarily mean 4yo tires. I'd be curious to see the real age. Sounds like you take care of them. btw, ever hit a pothole that might have beat on that tire more than others?
