Hello eveyone!

First time poster and I would like some of your thoughts. I am getting a brand new Jayco 31BHDS for DW and two younng boys (6 and 5.) Any ways I am being offered an extended warranty for about $1,200 and would like your thoughts if I should get one or not. I am leaning toward no. This will be my third trailer and first Nnw one and first Jayco. Thanks for your input!

What ever makes you sleep well at night. If you have already owned some units you probably know enough about them to fix them when they break. As for me NO.

From a strictly financial point of view an extended warranty is never a good idea. Of course, if you are unlucky enough to have a whole bunch of problems within a short time it might be in your favor but statistically speaking you're much better off puting that money in an interest bearing account to use later for repairs. They generate much more money for the seller that the buyer.

EW's are a profit-making tool. Save your money. The likelihood is you'll never need $1200 worth of repairs anyway. And don't be fooled by: "It'll only add XX dollars to your monthly payment for this peace of mind!"

I was in the RV service business for nearly 30 years. The last two trailers I owned never went back to the dealer for service. I always do all of my own work.
However, even at my wholesale cost for a new refer/cooling unit or a new roof-air, I opted to purchase the three-year extended warranty on these two Dometic products that Dometic offered. I now have a total of 6 years warranty on the refer and roof-air for less than $300.00. With the issues that Dometic has had with defective cooling units and the cost for a new cooling unit, it will still be cheaper for me to pay for the extra warranty than do the work myself should one of these units need replacing.

I also purchased extended warranties on my two Yamaha generators, something I have no idea how to work on.

All of the mentioned warranties are directly from the manufacturers and not from an independent warranty company.
The money I spent on one generator has paid off already. My Yamaha 2400 had the inverter board go out. Cost just for that board was around $600.00. Cost for the warranty was less than $200.00 for an additional 5 years. No deductable and the repair cost me nothing.

Thanks for the advise, keep it coming! Steve, the refrig on the Jayco is Nor Cold. How are they, I am unsure on the roof A/C. How did you buy the extended warranty on just a few appliances. I think the refrigerator is one of the most expensive pieces of equipment.

There were forms in my instruction packet that offered the additional coverage.
I would think that Norcold would offer the same thing.

"No." is a complete sentence.

Trailers are simple machines. A box on a simple frame with some inexpensive appliances. A new furnace? About $400. Microwave? Less than $100 (I found an identical model for ours $40). Most things are adjustments and some basic care. And that's after the warranty is up.

Extended warranty is not a warranty. It's a service contract. Huge difference. It's also a huge money maker for dealers & the contract company. The dealer gets about 50% of the price. Even then, those service contracts have more loopholes and excuses than Congress.

Put the money in a maintenance and service fund and chances are 100:1 that you'll come out ahead.
