I feel like my brake controller is not operating properly. I have a HR fifth wheel which weighs about 11,800 loaded. I have the unit set at boost level two and yet if I actuate the brakes using the lever I get moderate drag, definitely not enough to stop the combo trailer/truck.
I set the control as advertised, stopped, apply lever adjust gain to 6.0, boost level 2 as mentioned. If I set the gain higher when the brakes are applied on city streets / low speed the trailer jerks excessively.
We use a prodigy and have pulled 30 & 40 foot TTs. Its too much to expect the TT brakes to stop the whole rig. At best it will slow them before impact! Just kidding! You should just feel the trailer brakes come into play a you apply the brakes firmly. At full lever most times I can't even get gravel to skid. With a lighter trailer maybe. Good luck
What controller is it? If you don't get a good signal you may want to check connections and grounds. My fancy controller didn't really give me great stopping power until I added a ground to the battery.

What kind of brakes are on the 5er? If they are drums, then they are likely in need of adjustment. With the tire(s) off the ground, you should tighten the adjustment screw with a brake spoon until you hear/feel the brakes rubbing. The wheel should make one rotation when you spin it by hand. The instructions of my Jordan Ultima controller suggest traveling at 25mph then apply the brake controller manually. Adjust settings until trailer brakes lock up, then back off just a notch.
