We were driving around the Norfolk area yesterday and saw a sign that required inspection of campers, tank trucks & vehicles with propane tanks before entering the tunnel. Do any of you know what they look for? I know the refrigerator will be running on propane while we are moving. We were told that we have to pull the TT through a tunnel to get up to Williamsburg. I ran a search on this site but did not get any specifics for requirements.

I have heard it both ways. You may or may not have tu trun off the propane tanks.

Usually, they ask you to turn off all propane at the tanks. Thats it, very casual and not intense. Believe me, they won't have you standing at attention, saluting, beside your RV while they thoroughly inspect every aspect of the RV!

They will check to see that the valves are turned off at the tanks.

Also, you don't have to go through the tunnel to get to Williamsburg. It's a much straighter and shorter trip, but there is a way around it. Several years ago when we were up there, they weren't letting anything with a propane tank through the tunnel.

They're just trying to insure folks with leaky rigs don't turn the tunnels into giant fuel-air bombs.

we went to virginia beach and had to go through the tunnels too. They have an area on the side for you to pull off and turn off any propane. We were never checked by anyone though. That was our first time being around that too, so we were wondering before going as I had read on here about it as well, but it ended up being nothing. And because of the "unknown", we stopped way before the tunnel to get gas and turned off everything there, which may be the best option when towing. I don't remember how big the turn off spot was.

We've been through the Bay bridge tunnel to Va. beach and we've never been inspected, when you pay the toll they just ask if your propane if off.

This summer we went through the tunnel at Mobile, AL going and comming home and there are no signs no inspection nothing. DW called some dept in AL before we left because we heard that some tunnels require you to turn off propane before entering, but they said it is not necessary.
