Can someone in the San Joaquin valley of California tell me if they have been successful in finding the calgon water softner that so many recommend for black tanks? I have tried several grocery chains, walmart, target, etc etc. I have found it online - but hate to pay shipping, if someone can direct me to a local place to purchase.

Thanks for your help!

We have no trouble finding it here, it's everywhere. However, Calgary has very very hard water, and I figure the more naturally soft an area's water is the harder it will be finding Calgon. I'm probably wrong, but it makes sense to me.

You're absolutely right: Stores won't carry it if there's no local demand. There are online sources; it's currently on sale at drugstore.com.

I had found this same link - but thank you for sharing. I was just hoping that someone in my general locality had been able to find it at a particular store so I wouldn't have to pay shipping...

I did look at the Super Walmart store in the laundry detergent section - based upon replies I had read in the past - our area must have "soft water" - but you could have fooled me. Doesn't seem very "soft" to me.

I will order this online. Thank all of you for your responses.

One more question - do you use the powdered or liquid? Does either one work better than the other? I was thinking that the powdered might be more economical, but one article I read said to be sure and dissolve it in hot water first.

Again - thanks for all the replies!

Try WalMart some of them around here handle it. I cannot find it in powder anymore but can find it in liquid just like the one someone posted a picture of.

Take a 5 gallon bucket, add two cups of any powdered laundry detergent, two cups of
I add the powder last. Use a 5 gallon bucket fill with water half way then do the following

Calgon water softener, and two cups chlorine bleach..........Fill with warm water to mix, then pour into the black tank. Till the tank with water and let sit overnight..................Do the same for the gray tank. The next day head for a dump station, the agitation of towing the trailer will break loose any residue on the tanks. Dump, refill, and dump again. The tanks will now be clean and sanitized.
