I did a search to the best of my ability and found nothing on this.

We recently purchased a Coachmen 27 ft fifth wheel and want to carry our canoe when we camp. Our problem is where should we attach it? Our TV is a F250 that has a tool box mounted and we don't think the canoe (15 ft) will fit on top of the truck because it is so long.

Anyone tried it? Suggestions?

Thanks,
Lisa and Mark

The way most cure the problem is to build a rack for the front end of the truck. Some folks use the bumper like a plumber, others use a hitch system that can be removed. When mounted the canoe extends over the front end and cab of the PU. Good luck and happy camping. Bill

Like Polishnurse said. Front receiver hitch with gule post and one roof rack bar on top of cab. A little hard getting canoe on but it works

Do a search for HappyKayakers in the Open Roads Forum and look at his profile. They have the rack over the truck. Would that work for you?

Take a look at the Thule 997 - Goalpost rack, we had a front receiver hitch installed on our truck. We are new to 5th wheels and only towed with our canoe a couple of times, so far no problems. The Canoe is a 16' Mad River about 75 pounds. I also purchased foam blocks to support the back of the canoe on the back/top of the cab. Don't have any pictures yet but will be glad to send them to you when I have some.

I have a front mounted receiver and a goalpost canoe rack. I have one Yakima rack on the roof of the truck to support one end and the other end fits on the goal post rack. We also have the bike rack mounted to the front receiver. The bikes bounced too much on the rear of the 5er. See the pic in my sig for canoe pic.

Our canoe if 15'5" and it fits fine.
We use the THULE goalposts on the front
and use the racks on top. WE can carry 2
canoes if we need to (and have.......)
It sticks out about 4 feet in the front;
but who cares we stick out 30 feet in the
back (hahahaha)

DH made his own. The commercially available ones require permanent removal of the factory fog lights, and temp removal of the tow hooks.
And stability can be an issue without tie straps from the rack to the bumper. His home-made version used existing holes beside the tow hooks. It's lightweight (aluminium) and has survived two trips to the Yukon and numerous gravel/bumpy roads.

Thanks for all the great ideas...and PICTURES. I'm very visual so this helps alot. I know Mark will not go for removing his front lights or anything like that.

Kampinguru...did you have to do anything special to attach your mount?

Sue...what holds the inserts into the slots?

We have an F250 4x4 4 door model. It has the tow hooks as well as fog lights?

You can buy a front mounted receiver for the truck. It provides a 2 inch receiver for a standard drawbar and you can mount whatever you want to the drawbar. My Truck doesn't have the fog lights, and I cant remember if the mounting required the fog light removal or not. It did involve removing the front bumper (4 bolts and the temoroary removal of the tow hooks). I still have the tow hooks as you put them back on after the receiver is on, then you put the bumper back on. Here is a link to the installation instructions for the Draw-Tite/Reese installation.
