Troubling article, although I'm not sure what sleep apnea in the last two or so paragraphs has to do with crossing the median?

Perhaps they meant narcolepsy?

When you have sleep apnea you will fall asleep at the wheel, The wife woke me up twice as I was going off the road. Then I decided it was time to do the sleep study and then get a Bi-pap machine. Now I sleep at night and fully rested

I have sleep apnea, have for years, and have never fallen asleep at the wheel (and don't use a CPAP). Why? Because I don't drive when I'm sleepy or tired. ANYONE can fall asleep at the wheel when driving when tired whether they have sleep apnea or not. Thus I don't see why it is significant.

Narcolepsy is when (as I understand it) you suddenly fall asleep, tired or not! THAT would be something worth mentioning in the article (as a possible cause of an accident) and should be enough to prevent you from getting a DL, let alone a CDL!

Anyway, this is somewhat off-topic so I'll just leave it at that.

Interesting article but, as a former trauma center nurse, I can tell you that drugs and alcohol are a lot bigger problem.

Sounds like the author has an axe to grind, in 1-2 examples there's no mention of any prior knowledge of the medical condition and I'm not sure what a doctors pill pushing has to with somebody being safe/not-safe with an artificial leg...!?

If your doctor diagnoses a condition that makes it unsafe for you to drive does he not have a legal obligation to report it to the DMV?

According to this site:
Sleep Apnea

when you have sleep apnea, you stop breathing in your sleep, not fall asleep. Since both my wife and a very good friend both have SA, this is closer to the truth.

Don't know about the percent today, but when I was driving Over the Road Trucks (Class 8) types. 70% of all accidents were cause by 4 wheelers. However I do know you have to have a Medical certificate (take a physical) to operate commerical Trucks over 26,000 lbs and if your pulling haxmat material or doubles, triples, tankers etc, you are tested. Most drivers holding standard drivers lic, couldn't pass those test. A standard drivers lic test is so easy a 9th grader can pass the test? And the cost to get a commerical Lic is out of sight. What if you had to take a physical to get your lic renewed every two years, I bet the author doesn't have a clue other than something someone else told him/her. He/She needs to get in one of those Trucks (over the road) for one month. He might have a little more respect for those drivers. GBY...
