Has anyone ever done a coversion of the "over driver CRT TV" to a new flat screen TV? Can you tell me what was involved or what problems were encountered? Is there an internet site that gives step by step instructions? I can do somethings but.... . Just getting tired of hitting my head when I get into/out of the drivers seat.

Welcome to the forum. There are quite a few people who have done just that. If you do a search above you'll probably get lots of hits. Effectively you need to buy a wall mount that will fit your suggested TV and maybe do some woodwork to match the new TV shape. Quite a few pics on posts here.

There are quite a few that have. For the most part it's finding a LCD that will fit in the hole. After that it is up to your imagination on how to proceed.
Most units have four buttons on the bottom side of the console. These buttons pop off and you will find screws holding the bottom to the sides of the cabnet. Remove the screws and the bottom falls off. Then depending on the rig and manufactor the Existing TV is usearly held in place with a metal band the is also screwed into the case of the TV. What you do from here is up to you. some folks make a new interrior to the cabnet with trims and all. Others just find a piece of plywood, cut to fit hole and mount one of them mounting plates on it and hang the TV on that with a bungie cord to keep it in place.
I have remmoved my bottom to see whats involved and decided to wait. I have all the tools need to do what has to be done. Just lack the strenght to handle the old TV getting it out without being crushed. LOL.... Bill

I replaced my 26" CRT with a 32" HD LCD and it was not a hard job at all. Get a helper to be able to assist you lifting out the old TV, it is really heavy and you are lifting up high. You need to measure inside the cabinet opening both actual cabinet opening and the opening of the bezel. I found an LCD that was almost the same size as my cabinet opening and the TV frame just a little smaller than my bezel opening, so my bezel fits right on the frame of the TV. I took a measuring tape with me shopping and measured just about every TV until I found the right one. TV's with side speakers are too big in most cases. Once the old TV is out you can determine how to install the new one.

I think all of the old tv cabinets stuck out several inches from the rest. I marked my tv cabinet, removed it and cut it so it would be flush with the ones on each side of it. I measured the distance between the doors on each side and found a LCD that would fit between them. There are several ways you can mount the new tv but I took the simple route and mounted a piece of 3/4" plywood inside of the opening just recessed enough to make the back of the LCD flush with the cabinets

Here is what I just did last weekend. I had a 26 inch TV and wanted to replace it with something a little bigger. As usual trying to fit a rectangular object into a square area just doesn't work out very well. The interior of my TV cabinet was only 25 inches across and that area was just too small to mount a decent size LCD panel TV into. So I ended up finding a 32 inch TV that was just slightly bigger that the outside of the TV cabinet.
Here is what our TV looked like.

It looks like the TV interferes with the doors on the upper cabinets, but there is actually about 1/2 and inch clearance.

You can see the clearance here:
